Cohiba Connecticut Toro
Halfwheel · May 30, 2019 · March 2019
If you go at the king you must not miss. I don’t think that many of the people regularly smoking Davidoff or Ashton Classic will probably give the Cohiba Connecticut Toro a shot, and I don’t think this stands up to either in many ways, but this is the best Dominican-made Cohiba I’ve smoked. While everything about this says Davidoff Signature competitor , it’’s a much different profile and one that can stand on its own against most cigars in the humidor. While a lot less expensive than the last Cohiba we reviewed , the price will be an issue for many, but a good cigar is a good cigar and this is exactly that.

General Cigar announced an extension to the Cohiba brand back in February: Cohiba Connecticut. This is the first Cohiba cigar to use a Connecticut Shade wrapper. Sean Williams, Cohiba Brand Ambassador said, “Our agronomists partnered with an independent grower in Ecuador’s Los Rios province to produce a silky and lustrous Ecuadoran Connecticut Shade wrapper. Unlike cloth-covered fields that shield the tobacco from the blistering sun in Connecticut, this special wrapper is grown beside Ecuador’s Vinces River and beneath the thick, natural cloud cover that blankets the region. The volcanic soil yielded a wrapper that was intentionally developed for its aesthetic qualities, with veins that are barely perceptible. Looks aside, the wrapper is ideal for blending, as it maximizes the filler and binder leaves.” This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. After the Connecticut wrapper, the blend uses a Mexican San Andrean binder, Brazilian Mata Fina, Dominican Piloto Cubano, Nicaraguan Jalapa, and Dominican Olor fillers. It is described by General Cigar as mild-to-medium-bodied. Cohiba Connecticut is rolled at General Cigar Dominicana and is a regular production cigar. It started to ship retailers in early March and was also shown off at IPCPR. It comes in the following sizes: Robusto (5.5” x 50); MSRP per cigar $19.99 boxes of 20, Crystal Robusto (5” x 50); MSRP per cigar $20.99 boxes of 10, Toro (6.25” x 52) MSRP per cigar $21.99 boxes of 20, Gigante (6” x 60); MSRP per cigar $22.99 boxes of 20.

Rolled with a tawny-hued wrapper, this large cigar has a lush draw that offers a primarily woody smoke along with notes of wheat and honeyed tea. The finish is sweet.

Two years ago, General Cigar Company hired Sean Williams to be the face of its Cohiba brand. Williams had built a name for himself in the cigar industry as the owner of Primer Mundo Cigars. Bringing in Williams was a strategic move because he was both a popular and knowledgable face in the cigar industry. […] Key flavors: Cream, Cedar, Citrus, Black Pepper, Wood.

I’m not the kind of guy who is into luxury branding. This cigar is seemingly trying to position itself in that category. I do prefer this cigar to those with which it looks to compete, but I don’t really reach for those cigars anyway, for what it's worth. If this cigar was $5, I’d have a box in the humidor; but at $20, there’s no incentive for me to recommend this if you’re looking for the best new-school Connecticut. If, however, you want to acquire some luxury , give this a shot. If it weren’t for the price/value score, this cigar would be pushing a 90 rating for me.

Released in March 2019, Cohiba Connecticut is the first Cohiba cigar made with an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper. The blend consists of Brazilian, Dominican and Nicaraguan filler leaves, bound by a Mexican San Andreas binder. The cigars are available in four sizes, including a Robusto (5½ x 50) priced at $19.99 per stick, which was sampled for this review. For more information about these cigars, please see thepress release. With a price tag of $20 and up (depending on size), Cohiba Connecticut can be considered a super-premium cigar. The construction is impeccable, the burn slow and even, the draw great, and the cigar's feel and appearance are top rate. The sample cigar held a long ash, and no relights nor touch-ups were needed during the 65 minutes that it took me to smoke the Robusto down to two inches remaining. The cigar had a pleasing tobacco flavor highlighted by modest amounts of pepper and spice with hints of sweetness, along with some light toast. The body was at the lower end of the medium range. About half-way through, a few creamy notes joined the mix. Although the flavor was enjoyable, it was not as satisfying as expected for a cigar priced at $20 per stick. I have enjoyed similar Macanudo cigars for about half the price. Therefore, when value is factored into the equation, I rate the Cohiba Connecticut with 3.75 points on a 5-point scale. Although the cigar's construction is impeccable, and the taste is comparable to some lower-priced cigars that I have rated with 4 points, a $20 price tag should deliver superior flavors that are better than just very good. As one example, check out theCohiba Macassar. For a lower-priced medium-bodied Cohiba, also check out theCohiba Blue.

Given the premium price point, and listed tobacco blend, I would have expected more flavor complexity out of these. If you gravitate towards the Cohiba brand, and are a Connecticut Shade smoker, this cigar will likely appeal to you.
