Drew Estate BLACKENED S84 Shade To Black Toro

Stogie Press · Dec 5, 2024

The newest addition to the Drew Estate portfolio is the Blackened “S84 Shade To Black”. The name “84” is a nod to Metallica’s 2nd album, Ride the Lightning, which was released in 1984. The “S” represents Shade. The name “Shade to Black” is an obvious nod to the song Fade to Black on that second album which Read more about Cigar Review: Drew Estate BLACKENED S84 Shade To Black Toro – Rated 95[…]

Blackened “S84 Shade To Black” by Drew Estate Corona Doble

Cigar Aficionado · Dec 1, 2025

Lightly hued with a blond wrapper, even burn and open draw. It’s broadly nutty with notes of almond, cashew and pecan sandies, while the finer points show honey, caramel and orange peel before a white wine finish.

Drew Estate Blackened S84 Toro

Blind Man's Puff · Aug 9, 2024 · March 2024

Drew Estate and Blackened are back with another collaboration, this time with the S84 “Shade to Black.” If you were a fan of the Blackened M81 that shook things up in 2022 with its bold, maduro -heavy profile, the S84 is like the next evolution—keeping the intensity but with a twist. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The S84 stays true to its roots with a mix of Nicaraguan Maduro and Pennsylvania Broadleaf fillers, all held together by a Connecticut Broadleaf binder. But this time, the blend is wrapped in a lighter, more refined Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade leaf, offering a new dimension to the Blackened lineup. This cigar comes from the minds of a power trio: James Hetfield of Metallica, Rob Dietrich, the master distiller behind Blackened Whiskey, and Jonathan Drew of Drew Estate. It first hit the scene in a mysterious Freestyle Live pack, leaving fans guessing before the official release. The name “S84” pays homage to Metallica’s 1984 album Ride The Lightning, with the shade wrapper adding a nod to the iconic track “Fade to Black.” Prices range from $10-$12 throughout all the sizes of the range, and they are of course rolled at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate.

S84 Shade to Black Corona Doble by Drew Estate

Simply Stogies · Jun 28, 2024

In March of this year, Drew Estate released the another cigar in the Blackened line: the S84 Shade to Black. This is the sophomore release for the line that is a collaboration between Metallica’s frontman, James Hetfield, Master Distiller of BLACKENED Whiskey, Rob Dietrich, and Drew Estate. Their first release, M81, was named after the...

Drew Estate Blackened S84 Shade to Black

Kaplowitz · Jan 16, 2026

Salted Caramel | Dessert Spices | Cashew Butter Cashew Butter is spread over a slice of brioche-like sweet bread. Dessert spices are steered by cardamom and ginger, braced by a finely-ground white pepper, and held together in a buttery manner. Salted caramel is the star, and as such, inhabits its own dressing room. Well-balanced, pleasant, and enough oomph to keep interest. Creamy suede profile depths are calm, consistent. Avoids becoming tart citrusy. Burns well and offers copious, kind, sweet

Blackened Cigars by Drew Estate S84 Shade to Black Lancero

Halfwheel · Mar 24, 2026 · September 2025

Quite simply, this is not the vitola I’d reach for when picking a Blackened Cigars by Drew Estate S84 Shade to Black. While I haven’t smoked all of the rest of them, I found the Lancero to bring out some added sharpness while suffocating some of the complexity of the nuttiness. There are some puffs that mostly avoid those minor pitfalls, but the majority of the time, I could taste the added sharpness. As far as the score is concerned, the combustion issues of the first and third cigars—also the two cigars with loose draws—hurt the score way more than the flavor profile’s issues. Life’s a series of compromises. While I’m certainly pro-small ring gauge, here, I’d go the opposite direction for better flavor.

Drew Estate Blackened S84 Shade to Black Robusto

Developing Palates · Jun 26, 2024 · March 2024

I love the Drew Estate Blackened S84 Shade to Black Robusto. This is a great Connecticut release, and one with a fantastic price too. Great flavors with a nice strength and body level. You really can’t ask for more from a Connecticut of this nature. It’s not intended to be super elegant like some Connecticut releases, but just really good at a great price.
