Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust Year of the Duque

Halfwheel · Jun 5, 2025 · April 18, 2025

While I definitely have my favorites, it is no great secret that I have been a fan of just about every cigar that Saka has released so far, and the Year of the Duque is no exception. The blend is bold but refined, with main flavors that shift from anise, cedar, cloves and earth, along with raisin and bready graham cracker sweetness combined with black pepper on the retrohale. Two of the three cigars needed multiple burn corrections to stave off larger issues but those relatively minor construction problems can’t disguise the fact that this is an excellent blend and a wonderful tribute to a wonderful person who has played a role in Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust’s success.

Dunbarton Year of the Duque

Cigar Dojo · Aug 20, 2025

The Year of the Duque by Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust is a thoughtful, slow-burning tribute to Chris Duque—eschewing gimmicks for craftsmanship and clarity. It opens with bold notes of espresso, charred oak, and floral hay, wrapped in molasses-laced smoke and a peppery retrohale, with dry cinnamon adding warmth. While the construction is excellent and the flavors largely hit, a creeping earthiness in the final third dulls the finish. Whether you’re a longtime follower of Saka’s work, a fan of intentional blends, or someone who respects the story behind the smoke, Year of the Duque offers a memorable, if slightly uneven, experience that’s worth lighting up at least once.
