H. Upmann Nicaragua by AJ Fernandez Sunrise Churchill
Cigar Aficionado · May 26, 2026 · Cigar Insider
A blond Churchill topped with a round head that draws and burns evenly, delivering a dense, creamy smoke. Impressions of cedar, earth, vanilla nougat, almond and lemon harmonize and resonate on the finish. Perfect for fans of milder cigars.

When I first started smoking cigars, Oliva's NUb brand was coming down from what was likely the peak of its popularity. NUb was marketed under the idea that its unique dimensions delivered a profile that was akin to how the middle parts of a normal-sized cigar might taste. Basically, you didn't have to wait for the cigar to find its groove. Perhaps because of that or just how the industry, media and forums were going at the time, there seemed to be a lot more discussion about how cigars started. People would talk about how Pepín would blend his cigars to make sure that they started with a blast of pepper, for instance. In many ways, this is more or less what I'd think of as an AJ Fernandez-made Connecticut cigar. Full flavor, more medium in body and strength, great construction. Except, it's all a bit backward to me. Whereas many cigars start harmoniously and then finish with a final third of less balance and direction, this went the other way. I'm indifferent to the ordering, but perhaps this will be the thing I remember most about Sunrise, and that might be important. AJ Fernandez makes a lot of different cigars for lots of clients. Because of that, there are a lot of different AJ-made Connecticuts on the market. I don't think this is the very best one, but I do think it delivers a lot of the stereotypical AJF experience without the requisite nicotine. For many, that might be a great sweetspot.
