The chocolate-and-cherry character of this cigar is disjointed at first, but becomes more cohesive, as do notes of earth and espresso before the macaroon finish. The burn is a touch wavy, and the draw a bit firm.

AJ Fernandez is a frequent collaborator of Altadis U.S.A. and their latest project together falls under the H. Upmann brand, a Cuban cigar brand historically, but with the American trademark belonging to Altadis U.S.A. The first cigar under the H. Upmann Nicaragua AJ Fernandez banner was released in 2017. It was later followed in 2019 by a limited edition called Finca La Lilia 2009, and also had a few other sizes added over the years. The original used a Sumatra wrapper while this new blend, H. Upmann Nicaragua AJ Fernandez Heritage, uses a Brazilian Mata Fina triple fermented wrapper, Habano Nicaraguan binder, and 100% Nicaraguan tobaccos in the filler from AJ’s farms. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. This new Heritage version debuted at TPE this year and is offered in 5 sizes: Corona 44 x 5 1/2 $9.75, Robusto 52 x 5 $9.99, Toro 54 x 6 $10.35, Torpedo 52 x 6 1/8 $10.50, and Churchill 54 x 7 $10.75.

The H. Upmann Nicaragua AJ Fernandez Heritage Toro reminds me of an overproof bourbon like Booker’s. This is not the profile that I would regularly choose, but I know it’s one that will have an audience—however small—that will love it. And in that regard, I think it’s a pretty compelling case. If you want a cigar that’s cranked up to 11 in just about every regard, the H. Upmann Nicaragua AJ Fernandez Heritage does the job. Even the third most aggressive flavor would be stronger than the leading flavor in the majority of cigars on the market. It’s balanced only in the sense that everything is to the extreme. Given people's ability to associate strength only with nicotine, it’s a bit interesting that the most restrained thing might be the nicotine, which is just “strong” rather than “very strong.” Regardless, much like Booker's, this is a cigar that is going to require a very specific type of consumer to enjoy and could easily scare off novice cigar smokers.

H. Upmann Nicaragua AJ Fernandez Heritage is a new addition to the core line of cigars for H. Upmann. It has a Nicaraguan-heavy recipe with a unique addition of Brazilian Mata Fina wrapper, making this a bolder and richer smoke. Flavors of charred oak mixed with sweet fermented fruit and spice make for an interesting smoking experience. However, there is some off-flavor acetone at the start of the first couple puffs. This, coupled with the physical feeling of harshness, takes away from the overall enjoyment of the cigar.

The H. Upmann Nicaragua AJ Fernandez Heritage Toro had a nice start with a vibrant set of flavors. The second third saw the vibrance wane a fair amount and maintained an average profile from that point on. The price point is attractive, but even with that, the overall smoking experience wasn't one that would bring me back to this cigar with any kind of frequency.
