Joya de Nicaragua Antaño Gran Reserva GT20
Stogie Press · Dec 13, 2021
Back in 2001, Joya de Nicaragua introduced a bold and strong cigar which they named the Antaño 1970. From it’s first incarnation it has been a well received brand garnering high marks throughout the two decades on the market. The company’s website notes: “Antaño in Spanish means ‘Yesteryear’, a word that perfectly expresses the soul Read more about Cigar Review: Joya de Nicaragua Antaño Gran Reserva GT20 -Rated 95[…]

In April of 2021, Joya De Nicaragua announced a new special version of its Antaño Gran Reserva line, the Joya de Nicaragua Antaño Gran Reserva GT20. The very first Antaño was released in 2001 and helped put Nicaraguan cigars on the map. It was at one time considered the strongest cigar in the world. The GT20 is made to celebrate the 20th anniversary of that release. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Since 2001, the Antaño line has grown to hold many other line extensions and over 24 vitolas. Other lines in the series include Antaño Dark Corojo, Antaño CT, and Antaño Gran Reserva. The only difference between the GT20 and the regular Grand Reserva line is the size Antaño Gran Reserva GT20 comes in just one vitola, a 6×52 Gran Toro. It comes in 20-count boxes and each cigar sells for $9.50.

Everyone thought it was gone forever, but last year, Joya de Nicaragua brought back its Antaño Gran Reserva line. Once a limited-edition brand from 2005, the new cigar is made with the same blend as the Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970, only this Gran Reserva has older filler tobaccos. In the cigar world, a little extra age can go a very long way. In this case, it put the Robusto Grande on the Top 25 list. Joya de Nicaragua is the oldest cigar factory in Nicaragua, and the company believes the Gran Reserva to be emblematic of the quintessential Nicaraguan cigar. The wrapper is from Jalapa and full-bodied ligero from Estelí is at the heart of the filler, but the extra age has refined the blend.

I’ve always kind of felt that the Joya Antaño 1970 was just sort of a "strong for strong’s sake" cigar that didn’t impress much in other areas. This cigar, made with aged fillers, makes a strong case for buying a box (or three) of the 1970 and not touching them for five years (but then again it's probably easier to let the JDN factory do the legwork). The size was a joy, although the box-press was a little extreme and affected the burn a little. This is a cigar that I wouldn’t smoke everyday, as it’s just a little too good to not pay attention to, and I don’t always want to sit around and focus on a cigar for two hours. So, it’s no dog-walker or yard-gar, though not a celebration cigar either. This is a sit-and-enjoy-a-cigar cigar. This was everything good about Nicaraguan tobacco, distilled down into concentrated, yet clean and nuanced flavors. It was powerful, yet smooth. Strong, yet graceful.

While I have always been a big fan of Joya de Nicaragua cigars in general—the Cabinetta blend is one of the best morning cigars you can buy—I have always found the Antaño blend to have too much strength and too little balance. Thankfully, while still on the high side of medium, the aged filler in the Antaño Gran Reserva Presidente takes care of the strength issue nicely, resulting in a much smoother, more balanced and overall more enjoyable profile compared to its Antaño 1970 brothers. While still not the most complex of blends, the Presidente has some very distinct flavors of creamy cedar and oatmeal along with an ever-present raisin sweetness on the retrohale and the overall construction was extremely good. An enjoyable cigar—yes, even in the morning, albeit after a big breakfast—that I would not hesitate to try for yourself if you come across them.

The Presidente format of the Antaño Gran Reserva, like the Belicoso, is a tasty cigar. For such a big cigar, I would have appreciated more transitions. The good part is, the Presidente from start to finish was a good and consistent profile that will make the 2.5 hours of smoking time go by before you know it.
