Drew Estate Liga Privada No. 9 Cigar Review

Simply Stogies · Dec 9, 2022

I remember when I first smoked the Liga Privada No. 9 years ago. My local lounge said there were some production problems and they would not be getting any in for quite some time. I waited for a couple months and then I finally was able to grab one. Smoking this cigar for the first...

Liga Privada No. 9 Corona Doble

Cigar Aficionado · Jan 1, 2016

Look closely at the band of the Liga Privada No. 9. The words "Hecho Exclusivamente Para El Jefe" are printed in small font. It translates to, "Made Exclusively For The Boss." In this case, the boss was Drew Estate's former president. He's no longer with the company and the boss is now Swisher International (which acquired Drew Estate last year), but the cigar remains on the market. And why shouldn't it? It has a fiercely loyal following that's gone way beyond cult status, and La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate in Nicaragua can't make enough of them. The bands also resemble the type of industrial labels found in distillation plants and tasting laboratories, thus emphasizing the notion of Ligas being intended for internal consumption. The look and story behind Liga Privadas intrigued cigar smokers everywhere, but so did the cigar itself. Each one is a dark and ominous shade that can go from dark brown to an oily black. They're solid to the touch and packed tightly with loads of hearty tobacco, yet still draw beautifully. It's one of the heaviest blends on the market and is bound by a gutsy Connecticut broadleaf wrapper and Brazilian Mata Fina binder. Every puff of the Corona Doble seems to make a bold statement with a complex range of strong earthy flavors, a sweet quality redolent of perique tobacco and a sweet tarry finish.

Liga Privada No. 9 “Flying Pig”

Halfwheel · Aug 29, 2009 · November 2009

If you can find one (or more) of these cigars, I suggest you buy them, at the very least to try. The price is great for what you get; a spicy yet complex bomb of flavor that is never overwhelming and it is a great stick to look at as well.

Drew Estate Liga Privada No. 9 Robusto

Blind Man's Puff · Aug 7, 2013

“Liga Privada” translates to “private blend.” The blend was originally create for at the time Drew Estate CEO Steve Saka. It was originally blended for his own personal use, not for sale. They went through several iterations before landing on this blend. Today we are reviewing the Drew Estate Liga Privada No. 9 Robusto. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend uses tobaccos from seven different farms and each wrapper is hand fermented for 18+ months. Only four pairs within the factory are certified to produce the blend. Each pair is allowed to craft only 250 cigars per day. Cigars are aged a full year before offered for sale.

Agile Cigar Reviews are cigar assessments where we use a lightweight, shorter format. These will never take the place of our comprehensive reviews. They are only used on blends we have previously assessed. This might be a blend we are re-scoring or giving a score for the first time. It might be a blend we […] Key flavors: Mocha, Coffee, Earth, Black Pepper, Dark Cherry.

Liga Privada #9

Holt's Staff Reviews · Oct 15, 2020

Today, I’m reviewing the vaunted Liga Privada No. 9 in a hearty 6 x 52 Toro. Liga Privada, Spanish for private blend, is made by Drew Estate at the company’s sprawling factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. The blend debuted in 2007 when company founder Jonathan Drew began building a portfolio of traditional, non-infused premium cigars to sit beside his wildly popular infused brand, Acid. In 2014, Drew Estate was acquired by global tobacco conglomerate Swisher International, Inc., the maker of several mass-market machine-made cigars, most notably Swisher Sweets.

Liga Privada No.9 Corona Viva

Cigar Journal · Dec 15, 2019 · Top 25 Cigars of 2019: The Complete List (Rank #6)

In the creamy smoke of this cigar there is a chocolate sweetness, woody aromas, notes of fruit, the scent of bread and coffee, as well as roasted aromas. A very complex blend with a lot of spice, some pepperiness, and a fine sweetness.
