Sometimes, when a company makes a larger version of a successful cigar, the blend doesn’t scale up properly and it loses some of the elements that made it great in the first place. Not here. The Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua Espeso is a bigger, thicker representation of the brand, not only capturing all the coffee bean, earth and spicy notes of the original sizes, but actually enhancing them. The blend was conceived by Rafael Nodal of Altadis U.S.A. and Nicaraguan cigarmaker A.J. Fernandez as a tribute to the 80th anniversary of the iconic brand. Together, they struck gold with a rich, powerful cigar worthy of the Montecristo name. Accolades piled up quickly, including high scores in our blind tastings and the No. 2 spot in 2021’s Top 25 (for the No. 2 size). A few years after the brand’s release, Altadis added its first addition to the line—the Espeso. The word translates to “thick” in Spanish, because that’s exactly what this cigar is. It’s big, it’s box-pressed, it’s chunky and it’s delightful. It’s also proof that you can indeed enlarge a cigar without diluting its properties. In this case, you might even be making it a little better.

The Montecristo has been around for 86 years, starting in 1935. Last year, Altadis released a cigar to celebrate that milestone, Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua. The company described it as their interpretation of the original blend from 1935. This new cigar was blended by Grupo de Maestros, Rafael Nodal, and AJ Fernandez. Together, they selected the aged tobacco and blended the final product. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua comes in four sizes, all soft-pressed: Churchill: 7 x 52 $17.50, No 2. 6 1/8 x 52 $16.43, Toro 6 x 54 $15.95, and Demi 5 1/2 x 46 $10.40. The blend is a Nicaraguan puro made with tobacco from AJ Fernandez ‘s farms. It is rolled at Fernandez’s San Lotano factory in Ocotál, Nicaragua. All come in boxes of 10 except the Demi size, which comes in boxes of 20. The new band is made using reflective gold and black colors to call attention to the cigar’s limited production. The box uses two-toned wood that showcases both origin and brand aesthetics along with gold finished elements and hardware. This is not to be confused with the Habanos cigar with a similar name, Montecristo Línea 1935, which we reviewed here.

In my original review, I described two main issues with this cigar: first, the amount of spice and black pepper in the first third overwhelmed just about any other flavors that were present; second, that combining with the blend's full strength—which seemed to hit all at once in the final third—had a negative impact on the overall balance. Almost exactly one year later, that situation has improved dramatically. While there was still plenty of both spice and black pepper at the front of the profile, both evened out nicely by the middle of the first third, allowing some great flavors of sweet oak, espresso beans and cocoa nibs to flourish. In addition, the caramel sweetness on the retrohale from the first samples has morphed into a very distinct maple syrup note that is very prevalent throughout the smoke. All that, combined with the excellent burn, draw and smoke production as well as a reduced strength level, and the end result is not only a better overall cigar but also a cigar that seemingly still has quite a bit of gas left in its tank.

Well, because for several years, any time I see multiple numbers in a row, my brain adds them together. What does this have to do with this cigar review? “Nothing. Typically, based on smoking experience, when I see another non-Cuban Montecristo, I assume an average experience. My assumption basically made an ass out of myself. The Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua No. 2 was far from average, being quite complex with sweet Hawaiian bread, barnyard, herbal tea and baking spices for most of the smoking time (last third lost steam). I'll happily smoke more of these.
