The My Father La Opulencia blend is a marriage of two opulent tobaccos with splendid provenance—Mexican and Nicaraguan. The wrapper is a dark Mexican San Andrés that the company calls Rosado Oscuro. There are two Nicaraguan binders underneath, one Corojo and one Criollo, both of which bolster the body of the cigar. And then there's the filler, a combination of Cuban seed tobaccos grown by the Garcia family, owners and makers of the My Father brand. The Garcias have a number of farms in Nicaragua, and La Opulencia shows off the quality of the leaves grown on these tobacco plantations, known as El Pedrero, Las Lometas and La Bonita.This isn't the first time the Garcias have experimented with the Mexico-Nicaragua combination, but My Father La Opulencia is the most refined version of this blend, combining body, complexity and a stellar appearance. It's neatly box pressed and adorned with a secondary band that reads "La Opulencia," as this line is an offshoot of the core My Father series of cigars. The tobaccos play off each other in interesting ways. The combustion is perfect, the draw offering earthy underpinnings of chocolate and cocoa with each puff, balanced by a mid-palate oakiness and sweeter, subtle top notes of anise and nougat. And this cigar evolves, getting stronger incrementally as the flavors gradually gain intensity. It's another top effort from the Garcias, who have won Cigar of the Year two times.

My Father is a critically acclaimed brand handmade in Estelí, Nicaragua, and blended by celebrated cigarmaker José ‘Pepin’ Garcia, known by most simply as ‘Pepin.’ We’re fortunate to host the Garcia family here in Philadelphia at a handful of our annual Holt’s events. Pepin and his son, Jaime Garcia, form a legendary father-and-son cigar-making team responsible for creating a number of award-winning cigars, including two former Cigar Aficionado ‘#1 Cigar of the Year’ titleholders: Flor de las Antillas Toro in 2012 and My Father Le Bijou 1922 Torpedo Box Press in 2015.

At the 2017 IPCPR trade show, My Father Cigars announced a new line of Cigars for this year. La Opulencia translates to “the opulent” in Spanish, which is meant to show the type of cigar they were trying to create. This was originally an old Cuban brand that the Garcias revamped. Today we are reviewing the My Father La Opulencia Corona. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend is composed of a dark, Mexican San Andres wrapper classified as rosado oscuro, It has two Nicaraguan binders, a Criollo and a Corojo around Cuban-seed fillers from Garcia family owned farms, including the El Pedrero, Las Lometas and La Bonita plantations. La Opulencia comes in six box-pressed sizes: Petite 4 1/2 x 48, Corona 5 x 46, Robusto 5 1/4 x 52, Toro 6 x 54, Super Toro 6 x 60, and Toro Gordo 7 x 56. The cigars are packaged in 20-count boxes and retail from $7.10 to $12.54. La Opulencia is rolled in Nicaragua at the My Father Cigars S.A. factory.

My Father has a stellar lineup of cigars, and this one is no different in that regard. The only problem, I would say, is that their product is so good on the regular, that introducing a new blend carries such high expectations. In other words, it’s just another satisfying My Father cigar; which is fine. La Opulencia is certainly able to hold its own within the company’s profile. I can’t find any fault about it, save for a lack of any true "it factor." It’s a showcase of some of the Garcia’s wonderful tobacco, presented in a perfectly adequate manner; somehow, I am just left wanting more. C’est la vie.

There are perhaps a dozen cigar companies that I will make an effort to eventually try every single new blend they release, and My Father is one of them. The La Opulencia is an extremely smooth blend, with a profile that features a medium-full strength and dominated by core flavors of both earth and leather, along with a slight vanilla bean sweetness that comes and goes throughout. In addition, the construction was quite good overall and there was a somewhat surprising lack of pepper on either the retrohale or finish, especially for a My Father creation. There are a number of things to like about the La Opulencia and it is a very easy cigar to recommend trying, but My Father makes a number of blends that feature a more complex profile.

Flavorwise, it was dominantly earth and leather with a great caramel sweetness within the first two thirds, but unfortunately tapering off within the last third. This new blend is definitely worth a try but nothing to go deep on.
