This past weekend, the weather was quite nice. After a week of heavy thunderstorms, it was good to feel the sunshine and the light summer breeze. After Sunday supper, I went into the backyard, gathered some branches that had come down during the storm and decided to stoke up the fire pit. Once I had everything lit, it was time to spark up a cigar. Since it was only 7:00, I had plenty of time to enjoy a larger cigar. I ran inside, popped open my humidor, and there was a San Cristobal Ovation Decadence (6.5 x 52) staring right at me.

Leathery notes are brawny and bold from first puff to last, with layers of cocoa powder, vanilla and earth in between. The draw is a touch firm and the burn, a bit wavy.

As I noted above, I was a bit surprised to see that the San Cristobal Ovation Decadence uses a San Andrés wrapper as I certainly wouldn't have guessed from the flavor profile, though this different take on the leaf certainly isn't disappointing. The cigar is generally solid from start to finish save for a few rough puffs, and while I didn't find the vibrance and complexity to be the most engaging or compatible with my palate, it did a commendable job holding my attention from start to finish. I could certainly go for a bit quicker burn in the second half as the flavors didn't have me thinking about wanting to slow down and really savor them, though I also wasn't in a hurry to get through them. Overall, the 2016 version of the San Cristobal Ovation Decadence is a hearty, enjoyable cigar that merits a try when you're in the mood for a near full bodied smoke with solid flavors and a good interplay between pepper, rich sweetness and robust core notes.

A strong start for Ovation disappointed with an equal, yet opposite finale. The cigar begins with a complex and absolutely pleasant profile but surprisingly shifts downwards on each subsequent third. In the end, a near-perfect construction was the only redeeming quality for Ovation. Maybe if the price was less and the length was shorter, it wouldn't have felt like such a burden to go the full distance.
