In 2018, AJ Fernandez took over the Ramon Allones brand, which had previously been owned by General Cigar Co. The brand had previously been a part of the Foundry line of General with some cool retro packaging but sales did not support it, so it was then discontinued. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend Ramon Allones by AJ Fernandez uses an Ecuadorian habano oscuro wrapper, Nicaraguan corojo 99 binder, and Nicaraguan corojo 99 from Jalapa, criollo 98 from Condega, Pueblo Nuevo and a hybrid leaf grown in Estelí for filler. It comes in four sizes: Robusto 5 1/2 x 50, Toro 6 x 52, Churchill 7 x 50, and Torpedo 6 1/2 x 54.

Toasty and earthy at first, this dark, oily Churchill unfolds complex layers of espresso, anise and nutty spiced cake notes with a hint of honey. The finish smacks of dried cherry. Balanced and full of flavor.

I’m not sure if it’s time or the size that made the difference, but what a difference it made. The first two examples of the Ramon Allones by A.J. Fernández were not great, just an average cigar from what seems like the world’s busiest cigar factory. When I finally got around to smoking a store-bought Torpedo, I found a cigar that was far better than I remembered. The first two-thirds were an awesome hearty mixture and the final third, while a bit finicky, was a logical conclusion to an otherwise great cigar. The three samples I smoked for review were the best cigars I’ve smoked from A.J. Fernández, the company, since the Mayimbe .

In the end, the Ramon Allones by AJ Fernandez Toro didn't seem like much of a departure from other AJ blends and I felt like I was smoking a cigar that was fairly close to some of his other offerings. The cigar is fine, but with the increased price point, I'm not sure it is something I would gravitate towards if I'm looking for something in his normal flavor profile.

Absolute first-class handiwork. Coffee, earth and almond aromas develop, ample pepperiness, as well as dark chocolate. Added to this are hops, wood, leather and a vanilla sweetness, and also herbal spice in the creamy smoke.
