Last year, Robert Holt introduced both the Rose of Sharon and Jacobs Ladder, each taking a spot on our Top 25 Cigars list 2017. Earlier this year, he announced a line extension to the Rose of Sharon, the lancero. Initially this was an exclusive to Famous Smoke, but now you can find it many places. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The cigar measure 6½-inchs by 40-ring and is soft box-pressed. It comes in boxes of 20 cigars. The blend uses a Nicaraguan-Dominican filler blend and an Ecuadorian Sun Grown Connecticut wrapper from a rare harvest that saw over 300 days of heavy cloud cover. “Together with our partners at AJ Fernandez Cigar Co., we are dedicated to changing the perception of historical draw and burn issues experienced with many thin cigars,” said Robert Holt. “We’ve also addressed value perception. Despite the fact that lanceros are among the hardest and most expensive cigars to roll, we are offering our lanceros at the same price as our robusto -size cigars.” And considering the caliber of the tobaccos and handcraftsmanship, at under $10 per cigar, the new Lancero has been positioned at a very reasonable price. “I believe that when they’re consistent and priced favorably, Lanceros are destined to become the new classic size,” added Robert.

Back in January, Southern Draw Cigars announced its first major release for the 2018 calendar year – a lancero size for its Rose of Sharon line. Rose of Sharon is an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade offering that had a very limited release just before the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s August 8, 2016 deadline before […] Key flavors: Berry, Cream, Cedar, Red/Black Pepper.

Holt's Staff Reviews · Aug 24, 2022
While it’s tough to keep track of all the cigars blended by AJ Fernandez to smoke these days, I’m reviewing another small-batch creation from the Southern Draw portfolio, Rose of Sharon, in a 5.5-by-54 Robusto. The Southern Draw brand is based in Texas, but brand founders Robert and Sharon Holt have been working with AJ Fernandez to produce their cigars in Nicaragua since their company’s debut seven years ago.Read full review on Holt's Staff Reviews
Southern Draw Rose of Sharon Perfecto
Cigar Aficionado · Feb 1, 2022
A tan cigar that’s tapered at both sides. The draw and burn are open and even, offering a toasty, nutty smoke with citrus notes and a floral quality. Hints of nutmeg and earth lead to a graham cracker finish.

Halfwheel · Mar 28, 2018 · January 2018
The retrohale on the second third of the Rose of Sharon Lancero is an absolute masterclass of layering developed flavors. Unfortunately, unless the statistics on retrohaling have changed dramatically, most people will never get to experience it. And that’s an issue, because the retrohales in the second third—and to a lesser degree final third—are what make this cigar. There are construction issues and the final third’s flavor outside of the retrohale isn’t particularly great, but it’s more than worth the price of admission because when the cigar hits, it’s absolutely spectacular.

Developing Palates · Jul 10, 2017 · March 2017
Another of the newer Connecticuts that offers a bit more body and strength while the final third was more traditional. I would definitely recommend giving it a try and it's an easy decision to say that I'd smoke more of these.
