A.J. Fernandez New World Navegante At the 2014 IPCPR Trade Show, A.J. Fernandez Cigars announced the launch of a new line of cigars called the A.J. Fernandez New World. The cigar is significant for two reasons. First, it marks the first project that master blender A.J. Fernandez would collaborate with his father, Ismael Fernandez. Ismael recently […]

Abdel Joséf Fernandez, a.k.a. AJ Fernandez, has made a sizeable spark as a maker of premium cigars over the past ten years. His success has been steady. Fernandez hails from Cuba’s famed Pinar del Rio region where a local farmer, Riccardo Ledezma, provided AJ with a thorough introduction to tobacco growing and blending. Ledezma took Fernandez under his wing at the age of thirteen and fostered his passion for premium tobacco. Under Ledezma, AJ gained an intimate acquaintance with planting, harvesting, priming, fermenting, and sorting tobacco.Read full review on Holt's Staff Reviews
New World Redondo
Halfwheel · Jul 21, 2019 · May 2019
The New World seems to be a blend that has done well at retail, and three samples of the Redondo show why. The flavors are a well-balanced medium to full, with hearty amounts of pepper and heavier earth notes providing a solid base for touches of sweetness to appear by way of mild chocolate. Additionally, the construction is top-notch, with none of the three samples presenting any sort of issue. What doesn’t sit as well with me is the nicotine strength of the final third, some of the strongest I can recall feeling in recent memory, and is the one thing that would hold me back from smoking more of these or recommending them to someone. But if you're not shy of strength, and you've got a strong, full stomach, the New World Redondo makes for a fantastic choice.

Mocha | Compost | Cedar A cafe mocha made with baggy(burlap/mildew) beans. Hard to see beyond that to dried-peppered compost base braced by cedar planks. Toasted-salted caramel, pecan. Consistent-persistent.

The New World cigar was introduced by A.J. Fernandez in 2014. This cigar is a box pressed Nicaraguan puro, made entirely with tobaccos from four different regions in Nicaragua. New World cigars are available in four sizes, including a Robusto (5½ x 55) named Navegante, which was sampled for this review. Price is about $6 per stick, but falls to an average of just over $5 if purchased in a box of 21 cigars. The cigar commemorates the discovery of tobacco in the new world by Christopher Columbus in 1492, and the blend was a collaboration between A.J. Fernandez and his father. I found the New World Robusto to be medium-to-full bodied with a very enjoyable sweet peppery flavor at the start. The flavor smoothed out a bit after few minutes, when the tastes of earth and cocoa became more predominate, with a pleasing hint of spice. The cigar had a great/near-perfect draw, even burn, and held a long ash. No relights nor touch-ups were needed during the 50 minutes that it took me to smoke the cigar down to two inches remaining. I enjoyed smoking this cigar all the way down to the very last puff, and give it a superior rating of 4.25 points on a 5-point scale. For comparison, the larger New World Gobernador vitola (6½ x 55) was rated 88 in the March/April 2015 edition ofCigar Aficionado. Considering the relatively low price for a cigar of such high quality, I consider the New World to be a great value and worthy of a very strong recommendation.

I was genuinely surprised with how much I enjoyed this AJ Fernandez New World Navegante. It’s been years since I’ve had the blend but I thought I remember it being a “pepper-bomb.” Although it had some spice, it was by no means a “pepper-bomb” and it’s a cigar I’d certainly come back to. I can see this cigar being a great candidate for aging with the amount of body it has as well.
