The Gurkha Colección Especial took a slightly different path to market than most cigars on this list. The line started out with one shape, a double perfecto that was exclusive to TAA (Tobacconists Association of America) retailers in 2022. Later that year the company decided to roll out the robusto, toro, and lonsdale to all retailers.

Back at the 2022 PCA trade show, Gurkha Cigars showcased the latest in their limited-edition line of cigars – the Gurkha Colección Especial. While the construction was oftentimes excellent, I’m not sure if the Gurkha Nicaraguan Colección Especial Pirámide has the elements to be a very good cigar. It’s possible that the three I smoked are the worst three cigars that were rolled, but I suspect that statistical anomaly is not what’s happening here. If these three cigars are representative of the production run as a whole, I think the blend is too homogenous. While it’s not overly bitter, the semi-dry, semi-bitter and semi-harsh earthiness creates an overall experience where the takeaway is that it’s slightly too dry, slightly too bitter and slightly too harsh. It needs either less earthiness or more contrasting flavors. Unlike some cigars I smoke, this one is easy enough to enjoy if you have something else to focus on and pair with the cigar, but when it is the center of attention, it falls somewhat short.

It's hard to beat a good Connecticut with a great draw and burn line. With an enjoyable flavor profile, and a matching strength and body level, the Gurkha Colección Especial Lonsdale smoked wonderfully from beginning to end. Gurkha never seems to fail with Connecticut releases, and I am curious to smoke this offering in a different size.

This dark cigar starts off with cocoa, almonds, and nutmeg. Then chili and some aniseed come through before the cigar finishes with wood, cocoa, leather, coffee, and earthy notes.
