Although it’s certainly easy to make a mild cigar, it’s difficult to make a mild smoke that’s actually interesting and flavorful. Joya de Nicaragua, Nicaragua’s oldest producer of premium cigars, has accomplished this blending feat with its Número Uno L’Ambassadeur, a light cigar of both character and understatement. According to the story behind the brand, L’Ambassadeur was previously a commercially unavailable smoke and created to be presented as a diplomatic gift to visiting dignitaries and heads of state. If that sounds familiar, it’s because the Cuban Cohiba brand has a similar backstory. Regardless of its previous status, the Número Uno L’Ambassadeur is now available to anyone, whether you’re an international emissary or someone who just prefers lighter cigars. The draw here is impeccable, imparting a creamy, toasty smoke that speaks softly of vanilla, almonds and cinnamon. No flavor is competing for dominance on the palate. Rather, each note dances delicately like a well-choreographed ballet suite. It may come as a surprise that a producer known for making robust Nicaraguan cigars has decided to go in the other direction, but the Joya de Nicaragua Número Uno L’Ambassadeur is a skillful exercise in restraint. And with so many strong, full-bodied cigars getting much of the press, it’s always nice to see a cigar of nuance and subtlety excel in our ratings.

Joya de Nicaragua Número Uno Le Premier

Earlier this year in May, Joya de Nicaragua announced a new size in their Número Uno line: Le Premier. The Número Uno Le Premier is a 6 ⅞ x 48 Churchill of which only 800 boxes were made. The line started as the No. 1 in 2017, and was only offered to World Leaders by Nicaraguan ambassadors. in 2018 a small amount of bundles were sold at Joya de Nicaragua events, and in 2019 the cigar was changed to the Número Uno and saw a limited release to the world earning the #8 spot on our top 25 cigars of 2019 list. Número Uno is part of the Obras Maestras, or “Masterpieces” collection meaning Joya’s top of the line offerings. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The original Número Uno L’Ambassadeur size was limited in the United States to 800 boxes and this new Le Premier size will see the same production. It went on sale in July 2020 exclusively at brick and mortar retailers that participate in the Drew Diplomat Retailer Program. A smaller number of cigars were sold at global markets. The blend uses an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, and Nicaraguan fillers. The Le Premier comes in boxes of 25 that sell for MSRP $414.93/box or $16.60/stick.

In 1970, then-Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza Debayle visited President Nixon at the White House. After pleasantries, Nixon offered Somoza a cigar and much to Somoza’s surprise, the cigar that the White House had been sharing with global leaders after the Cuban embargo was this blend from Joya de Nicaragua.

Joya de Nicaragua Número Uno Le Premier

The Joya de Nicaragua Número Uno Le Premier is an example of a well-made cigar with good tobacco, but one that ultimately doesn’t make much sense to my palate. It’s a bit all over the place. And comparing it to the other two cigars in this series, it is completely devoid of the harmony—and at times simplicity—that I’ve found in the rest of the Número Uno line. It reminds me of a child at a buffet: indecisive about what it wants to do and then ending up with a plate that really doesn’t make sense. That’s not to say that it’s bad. Joya de Nicaragua gets the benefit of using what appears to be very good tobacco that has produced results as good as any other new cigar of the last few years. It’s just not as easy to recommend as the other two sizes of Número Uno. I want to be clear—most cigars aren’t as easy to recommend as the other two Número Unos—but the gap between those and the Le Premier is sizable in my mind, even if the scores don't seem that different.

The Joya de Nicaragua Número Uno L'Ambassadeur is simply fantastic. It is a tremendous Connecticut release and is complex from beginning to end. There is great transitioning taking place and it is always balanced. Releasing this cigar for the general cigar smoking world was a brilliant move by the company and I know I will turn to it quite frequently as my cigar of choice.
