When I first started writing about cigars, Rocky Patel was not a company with a great reputation amongst the online cigar media or really, internet cigar culture. That ran counter to both the accolades the company received in cigar magazines, the volume of sales the company produced, and probably the truth. I still remember the first Rocky Patel cigar I smoked that really changed my mind to this fact—the original Nording—and then the first cigar that wowed me in a way few cigars do: the Zen by Nish Patel, back when the cigar still had that name. Since then, I’ve found plenty to like in Rocky Patel’s large portfolio and this White Label is certainly amongst the company’s very best. My hopes are that people are willing to give this cigar and its notable price point a chance because it’s more than worth your time, and that the company can keep the cigar consistent over time. If it can do the latter, this is not only one of the very best cigars from Rocky Patel, but also one of the best new cigars from last year.

The light straw-and-hay quality of this smoke becomes more pronounced with notes of cappuccino, herbs and almonds. The draw and burn are easy and even.

I’ve smoked plenty of Rocky Patel cigars before, and today I’m smoking a top-shelf blend, Rocky Patel White Label in a traditional 5-by-50 Robusto. I’ve known Rocky as long as I’ve been in the cigar business, and I had the pleasure of hanging out with him when he visited Holt’s for our annual Rocky Patel event at the end of last year.

Rocky Patel White Label Toro

This is the ideal Connecticut shade flavor profile I look for. Soft notes galore, with sweetness and creaminess upfront, and accented wood and spice notes. But I have a major gripe about this Rocky Patel White Label Toro. The price tag of $20 for a Connecticut shade is a bit ridiculous. But I'll push that aside and will weigh more on the actual (more important) flavor experience.
