Earlier this year, Room101 ‘s re-launched their Daruma line. Originally introduced in 2012 as a follow-up to the Namakubi, the Daruma disappeared following Booth’s departure from Davidoff, leaving aficionados longing for its unique blend. Now, it’s back, drawing inspiration from the Japanese Daruma doll, a symbol of perseverance and goal achievement. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Crafted in partnership with the Oliva Cigar Company, the revived Daruma is a Nicaraguan puro, a single-origin cigar that speaks to the brand’s commitment to quality and the evolving tastes of cigar enthusiasts. Available exclusively in a 6” x 50 Toro size and priced at $12.99 per cigar, it promises a unique experience that aligns with Room101 ‘s philosophy of constant evolution. I have enjoyed most of the limited Room101 releases, including the OSOK and the Namakubi to varying degrees, but there always seemed to be something missing in the blends, something that would put it over the top in terms of complexity and flavor. Well, I am happy to report that whatever was missing, the Daruma blend found it. While I usually gravitate to the Papi Chulo vitola in the recent Room101 releases, I actually enjoyed the Lancero the most in the Daruma blend, by quite a large margin. The grapefruit note that is strongest in the second third is refreshing and quite unique as well, but the lack of any significant strength might turn some people off. This is easily the best Room101 I have smoked, and I am quite glad I bought a box, and I suggest that anyone who enjoys complex, flavorful and medium strength lanceros try them.

Room 101 Daruma cigars are Nicaraguan puros distributed by the Forged Cigar Company. The cigars are available in one Toro (6 x 50) size having a closed foot, and are priced at $12.99 per stick. These cigars were released during the Spring of 2023, and are not the same blend as the Daruma's of 2012. The cigars get their name from paper mache talismans used in Japanese culture, and are individually packaged in white wrapping paper surrounded by decorative shiny gold and black paper tubes. For more information about these cigars, please refer to thepress release. The sample Room 101 Daruma Toro cigar started off with a modest sweet and peppery flavor. The smoke was medium-plus bodied, and was very enjoyable for the first 20 minutes. After that point, a metamorphosis took place. The pepper backed off a bit, the sweetness started to disappear, and a few sour notes emerged. During the next 10 minutes, the peppery taste partially reemerged, giving the cigar a peppery dry and sour flavor, which lasted for the duration of the smoking session. The cigar had a mostly even burn, held a medium-to-long ash, and had a good draw. One relight was required a few minutes after the flavor metamorphosis that occurred at the 20-minute mark. It took me 60 minutes to smoke the Daruma Toro down to two inches remaining. The Room 101 Daruma Toro was a cigar was that both pleasing and disappointing. The first 20 minutes were very enjoyable, and good enough for a 4-point rating on a 5-point scale. However, the cigar's flavor dropped off dramatically after the initial 20 minutes, down to less than 3 points before the end of the smoke. Overall, my rating of 3.25 points on a 5-point scale might be a bit generous, especially when considering the cigar's $13 price tag.

Room101 Daruma

The Room101 Daruma came out of the gate with a promising collection of flavors that combined in ways to keep me engaged. I found the cigar unbalanced and harsh on the palate through the second third and the acrid component in the final third only added to that. I can't recall a cigar dropping this far between the first third and the second third, and I find myself wondering if the humidity level of the cigar was partially or largely responsible.
