The latest addition to the AJ Fernandez portfolio, New World Decenio, has arrived, and I’m smoking a 6.5-by-54 Toro for today’s review. New World Decenio comes in three soft box-pressed sizes: a chunky 6-by-58 Gordo, a 5.5-by-54 Robusto, and the Toro I’m about to fire up. Decenio cigars are handcrafted in Ocotál, Nicaragua, at AJ’s San Lotano cigar factory. Decenio is Spanish for “Decade” and was blended to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the New World brand, one of AJ’s top-selling lines.

After a significant blast of spice and pepper starts off all three of the New World Decenio Robustos, the profile calms down enough to show off enjoyable flavors of dry hay, toasted cedar and powdery cocoa nibs. However, the star of the show was the dynamic flavors I found on the finish, which added quite a bit more complexity to the overall profile of each cigar. In addition, the construction was very good overall, with only two cigars each needing a single burn correction. Ten years is a notable achievement for any cigar brand, and the New World Decenio Robusto is a worthy creation to commemorate just such an occasion.

The AJ Fernandez New World Decenio Robusto is a nice blend that captures that Mexican and Central American flavor profile. There is a nice cocoa and rich earth profile with some leather, tobacco, herbal and spice notes. There is balance with a nice level of complexity. The construction is perfect from start to finish, and it is an approachable cigar for many smokers. I would be curious to see the tobacco breakdown with this blend. I feel like the filler blend is much more Nicaraguan focused, but the Honduran tobacco has its place.
