It’s not every day I get to smoke a cigar as astonishing or elusive as a Fuente Fuente Opus X BBMF, but somebody’s gotta do it – to review it. BBMF stands for “Big Bad Mother F*#%&r,” and, as the name implies, it’s no ordinary Opus X. BBMF is easily one of the most unique cigars you’ll encounter. World-renowned cigarmaker Carlito Fuente unveiled the first Fuente Fuente Opus X cigars in 1995 following years of trial and error planting a perfect wrapper crop in the Dominican Republic. Dozens of other cigarmakers scoffed at the idea because they had tried and failed.

The profile of sweet and peppery on the retrohale is the absolutely perfect combination for me and this release has it in spades. In addition, it was not too strong—ending just shy of full—and the construction was good enough that I did not have to worry about it for the whole smoke. The rest of the profile was equally as complex and balanced with flavors entering and leaving so much that I soon lost track of them, but never so overwhelming that they were in competition with each other. In fact, just about the only problem I have with this cigar is that I will never see another one, but I would pay quite a bit of money—and probably do some unspeakable acts—if it ever came up for sale. This is quite possibly the best cigar I have smoked in the last year.

That an OpusX is going to be special is always a safe bet. The brand has special significance in Fuente’s history since it was the product that proved Carlito Fuente could make a Dominican puro (far less common at the time the brand debuted). It figures they’d make something impressive to celebrate two decades of OpusX.

Commemorating the twentieth anniversary of the OpusX brand, Arturo Fuente released the OpusX 20 Years Celebration line in the fall of 2016. Packaged in exquisite, highly-lacquered boxes and offered in four sizes—including the Father & Son (6¼” x 49) smoked for this review—the cigars are composed with a Dominican wrapper leaf from the third priming, instead of the upper primings used in the regular OpusX line. Delivering primary flavors and aromas of black pepper, cedar, coffee, dried fruits, and mixed nuts, the OpusX 20 Years Celebration Father & Son will entertain the palates of both the novice and the seasoned cigar enthusiast for almost two hours. The experience is ultimately hindered though, by an unjustifiable price point and a sporadic flavor profile—showing moments of brilliance and others of immaturity.
