Last year, AJ Fernandez released a new cigar in their New World line, but his cigar has a unique characteristic. All of the tobacco from this cigar comes from the same farm, something that very few other cigars can claim. The idea is similar to the wine world, where many wines use a single vineyard for their grapes to make a certain wine. This new cigar is called the AJ Fernandez New World Dorado. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend, of course is a Nicaraguan puro starting with a habano sun grown wrapper, and finished with Nicaraguan binder and filler from that same farm. The name of the farm in Estelí happens to be Dorado and the word translates to English as “Golden.” The cigar is rolled at AJ’s San Lotano Factory in Ocotal, Nicaragua. Dorado comes in four vitolas: Robusto 5 1/2 x 52, New World Dorado Gordito 5 1/2 x 60, New World Dorado Figurado 6 x 56, and New World Dorado Toro 6 x 54.

Premium cigarmaker AJ Fernandez has been blending and producing his own cigars for over a decade, and New World Dorado is one of his latest hits. I’m smoking New World Dorado in a 5.5-by-52 Robusto for today’s review to see if it lives up to the 94-point rating it recently received from the critics in Cigar Aficionado and whether you should add it to your rotation.Read full review on Holt's Staff Reviews

It isn't often that you get to experience something truly new in the world of premium cigars. Sure, there are new combinations of preexisting ingredients, but to genuinely smoke through uncharted territory, you need a cigar crafted largely (or entirely) from either (a) new seeds or (b) new soil. The New World Dorado falls into the latter camp, showcasing wrapper, binder, and filler components harvested from A.J. Fernández's Dorado farm of Estelí, Nicaragua. Being that the majority of the blend uses leaves harvested from this soil, I consider this a rare occasion of authentic newness . In terms of actual performance, the cigar is certainly an intriguing specimen, offering an especially aromatic experience without being overly nuanced (it's got some heat!). Savory, earthy flavors kick things off, hitting unique flavor combinations that reminded me of Italian cooking. This included a subtle sweetness in the background of an overall warm profile, which eventually helped to transition into aromatic florals, citrus, perfume, and even gingersnap. Unfortunately, not all samples smoked for review provided such thrills, with some leaning towards darker profiles that overlooked the aroma-heavy experience that I've found myself reaching for consistently since smoking this cigar for the first time.

The fifth addition of the A.J. Fernandez New World series debuted this year at the 2022 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) trade show in Las Vegas, NV. If you are hoping for a subtle bouquet of flavors that gradually layer themselves and transform as the cigar burns down, this cigar isn’t for you. In fact, I’m not sure what in the AJ Fernandez profile would meet that bill. It’s quite possible that outside of Padrón, there’s not a company—not to be confused with a factory—that has a more homogenous blending style than AJ Fernandez. It’s big, bold and, in this particular cigar, it’s pretty relentless. From the third or fourth puff on, the New World Dorado delivered an aggressive earthy and pepper profile that reminds me a lot of some of the more nuanced high-proof bourbons. Similar to those bourbons, this is not something I would gravitate to more than a few times per month; it’s too difficult for me to smoke cigars like this and then be expected to pick up nuanced floral flavors from a mild Cuban cigar tomorrow. But there are times in which I want to turn the volume knob up to 11 and this definitely can fit the bill of that guilty pleasure.

Most cigars tend to use tobacco from multiple farms or countries, so it is much less common to see a cigar constructed with tobacco from the same farm or country. The newest edition of the New World brand from AJ Fernandez not only uses tobacco all from the same country, Nicaragua, but also uses tobacco...

Back in 2014, AJ Fernandez Cigar Company launched what would become the company’s most successful brand, New World. The original intent of the brand was to pay homage to the days of exploration, in particular when the Europeans observed natives smoking tobacco. New World introduced a box-pressed Oscuro-wrapped offering at a very attractive $6.00 price […] Key flavors: Earth, Natural Tobacco, Berry, Baker’s Spice, Pepper.

Spice and sweet earth mingle and flow, uniting and separating smoothly through Dorado’s effortless initial draws. Sweeter earth, wood, spice, and coffee caress the retrohale. Caress. Sexy? Maybe. Probably not.Spice dominates the finish, primarily hanging on to the roof of the mouth, but allows for sweetness and a layer of smooth coffee

I really enjoyed the AJ Fernandez New World Dorado Figurado, and it was a nice return to the New World line/brand. I thought it was a solid Nicaraguan puro that delivered an enjoyable flavor profile that was present throughout. Not overly complex, or showing a lot of transitioning, but an overall good blend. I prefer the Toro vitola offering, but a nice Figurado.

This box-pressed cigar develops roasted, leathery, and wood flavors, along with fruity notes, pepper, a caramel/chocolate sweetness, almond and honey notes. Very harmonious and expressive.
