Asylum Cigars 13 Medulla Oblongata

Asylum 13 Cigars Medulla [Oblongata] Box Pressed Robusto - Cigar Review by Kaplowitz

Kaplowitz · Sep 6, 2018

Earthen forward dark 'baccy & peppercorn w/ brightly-sweet complexities. Leather, chocolate malt, toasted cream. Lush mouth-feel. Burns on a razor-line and offers a primo draw.

Asylum 13 Medulla Oblongata

Cigar Dojo · Dec 8, 2017

Asylum 13 Medulla Oblongata turns the attention away from Nicaragua and fully embraces the Eiroa family's signature Honduran Corojo tobacco with a puro blend. The cigars continue Asylum's "mental" theme, playing on the dual sides of the brain by showcasing each vitola in both round and box-pressed variations—displayed in the left and right side of each cigar box. The resulting blend is exemplary of the Cuban-esque nature of the Eiroa's Corojo leaf, showing a profile quite similar to Christian Eiroa's own EIROA cigar. While not as fiery and spicy as many Corojo blends, Medulla Oblongata instead focuses on a bright and lively profile of citrus, cedar, sourdough, and graham cracker sweetness. The cigars provided a near-perfect draw on most samples, offering a classic and easily enjoyable smoking experience on each session. Drawbacks included more touchups than ideal, a thin wrapper that cracked on some samples, and a slightly short smoking time (athough this is getting nit-picky). Ultimately, Medulla Oblongata is a medium-bodied and flavor-forward experience that easily outperforms its modest price range.

Asylum 13 Oblongata 50 × 5

Halfwheel · Nov 5, 2017 · August 2017

I have never been a huge fan of Honduran tobacco when compared against Dominican, Nicaraguan and even Cuban tobacco, but the Asylum 13 Oblongata may do quite a bit to start changing my opinion. While the profile is quite earthy on the palate, it never becomes overwhelming, and the ever present creamy nuttiness and vanilla sweetness—which tops out just after the second third has ended—really helps the overall balance shine. Construction was excellent across all three samples, and the presentation was easily above average, making  this a cigar that you should definitely try for yourself, even if Honduran tobacco has not been up your alley in the past.
