When I smoked the Caldwell Savages Corona Gorda back in October 2016, I closed the review by saying that I was already looking forward to the redux of the cigar, and after some 20 months of rest, I'm glad I picked this up when I did. Other than a bit of a burn issue and the rapidly increasing heat in the final third, this cigar seems to have reached where it was destined to be: rich, complex, balanced, smooth and incredibly enjoyable. If you've got some in your humidor and they perform anything like the one I smoked, go grab one and smoke it right now. If you happen to find one—or more—on a store shelf, buy it without a second thought and smoke it with your full attention, as it has turned into a remarkably good cigar.

Cigar Dojo · Aug 9, 2017
In the middle of 2016, Robert Caldwell introduced the Savages—a line extension to his Long Live The King blend. Produced in five sizes, including the Corona Larga (8” x 45) smoked for the review, the vitolas are wrapped in a Habano wrapper instead of the Dominican Corojo found on the original. The cigar begins with notes of cedar, honey, milk chocolate, and white pepper before rounding out to primary aromas and flavors of hardwoods, natural tobacco, and assorted spices. From a construction standpoint, the Corona Larga burns unevenly, requiring over a half-dozen touch-ups during its life span. While it provides a pleasant smoking experience, the Savages does not have the complexity, construction, or the distinct transitions to justify its $15.00 cost.
