Davidoff Escurio Robusto

Part of Davidoff ‘s “Black Label” series, which includes the company’s lauded Nicaragua blend, Escurio is being rolled in Santiago, Dominican Republic, at the company’s factory with a mixture of Brazilian Mata Fina and Dominican filler tobaccos, a Brazilian cubra binder and an Ecuador Habano wrapper that is dark, shiny and oily. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Escurio was officially launched at this summer’s IPCPR trade show. The sizes are meant to be relatively quick smokes, as each is less than six inches long. There are three shapes: Petit Robusto, which measures 3 1/4 inches long by 50 ring gauge and will retail for $8.50; Robusto, 4 1/2 by 54, $15.90; and Gran Toro, 5 1/2 by 58, $17.90. Escurio is packaged in black wooden boxes with metallic foil that contain 12 to 14 cigars as well as four-packs, with the Escurio halfmoon logo emblazoned on top. Coinciding with the launch of Escurio, Davidoff has created a line of cigar accessories. The accessories line includes a jetflame lighter, punch cutter, and two leather cigar cases designed to accommodate the smaller Escurio sizes.

This is a different profile than your average smoke. I really enjoyed the bright, citrusy flavors and the subtle chili spice, which was just enough to keep you awake, without being too aggressive. Compared to the average Davidoff, I found this much more interesting—yes it had a refined base that you can expect from the brand, but the profile felt much more lively and interesting, with evolution and changes throughout. Smoking this robusto directly next to the Petit size, I found this much more enjoyable. The Petit is not as mellow and smooth, with a heavier emphasis on dark coffee, leather, and spice. Compared to the Davidoff Nicaragua, I found this to be more fun. Our palates are so adjusted to the Nicaraguan profile and I felt that the Nicaragua didn't stand out in the crowd as well as this Escurio will.

The original Escurio blend has never been one of my favorite Davidoff creations. Thankfully, the Davidoff Escurio 10th Anniversary Limited Edition is a different cigar altogether. In fact, this is the cigar that I wish the original Escurio was: it is more complex, more balanced and more engaging, with an interesting combination of lime on the finish and fruity sweetness on the retrohale. Then there is the construction, which was flawless on two of the three cigars and extremely good on the last one. If the blend had just a bit more inherent body and a tad more sweetness, it would really bump it into the stratosphere, but even with those minor quibbles, I can tell you these are ready to smoke now, and I would highly recommend that you try them if you can find them.

I’m smoking a Davidoff Escurio in a 4.5-by-54 Robusto that comes in a tube. Davidoff Escurio was blended to highlight Brazilian tobaccos and features Brazilian Mata Fina and Dominican long-fillers tucked within a Brazilian binder finished in an oily Ecuador Habano wrapper leaf. The name Escurio is a combination of “escuro,” Portuguese for dark, and “Rio” in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s famously vibrant coastal metropolis. Let’s explore an uncharacteristically strong smoke from Davidoff and find out how it tastes and performs today.

Davidoff Escurio 10th Anniversary Limited Edition

I really enjoyed the Davidoff Escurio 10th Anniversary Limited Edition, and this is my favorite vitola ahead of the Corona Gorda. The cigar was complex and balanced throughout. The body and strength paired well with the flavors, and it kept my interest from beginning to end despite the larger size. The musty barnyard, earth, sweet spices and creamy aspects were great throughout, and they were a good base for the additional flavors throughout of coffee, nuts and sweet currants.
