Davidoff Millennium Blend Series Piramides

To kickstart the new millennium, Davidoff of Geneva released a one-off series of commemorative Millennium perfectos. In 2001, Davidoff followed up with the Millennium Blend Series and the brand continues to impress more than two decades later. According to Davidoff, the company blenders smoked 300 different versions before settling on the final cigar. The star here is the wrapper, a proprietary hybrid leaf grown in Ecuador that Davidoff refers to as “151.” Cigars from the Millennium Blend Series are darker than typical Davidoffs, and stronger too, especially the Piramides, which offers a richly layered array of maple candy, coffee bean and dark chocolate tones. Hints of oak and mocha beautifully frame the baking spice finish.

Earlier this year Davidoff announced it was bringing back a retired cigar from its White Band Collection, the Davidoff Millennium Lancero Limited Edition Collection. The blend uses an Ecuadorian 151 hybrid wrapper, Mexican binder, and the filler uses four different Dominican tobaccos. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The company says that it took the company’s master agronomists 300 trials to create the hybrid seed for the Ecuadorian wrapper leaf used on the cigar. The Davidoff Millennium Lancero Limited Edition Collection comes in just one size, a 7 x 40 lancero. Each cigar has an MSRP of $29.00 or $290 for a box of 10. Production was limited to 5,000 boxes for the U.S. market. This is the second of four Limited Edition Collections Davidoff will re-release as part of its “Cigar History Re-Rolled” campaign.

Smoking a cigar two decades after its launch is both a special experience and one that leaves me wanting an opportunity to go back in time to experience the cigar not just when new but at a few points along the way. The first few puffs of the first cigar had me worried that the experience would be dominated by the funkiness of Dominican olor that is a throwback to the previous generation of Davidoffs, which wouldn't be a surprise given when these were released. Thankfully that proved to be a fairly isolated experience, with plenty of other good flavors in the rest of that first cigar as well as the other two cigars. If anything, time may have taken some vibrance from the cigars, but it hasn't hampered the journey from start to finish, and while the flavors might not be as vibrant as they once were, they are still plenty defined and lively. While I would have liked to smoke these when they were new, smoking them just over two decades after their release was still a very worthwhile and enjoyable experience, and one I'm fortunate to have had.

Today’s an occasion when I get to smoke a pretty pricy cigar – Davidoff Millennium Blend. And I’m smoking a 5.25-by-50 Robusto, which, at $27.70 apiece or just under $700 for a 25-count box, I’d have to take a second mortgage out my house to buy. That’s not shocking, though, because all Davidoff cigars are expensive. Founded by Zino Davidoff in 1947 in Europe, the illustrious Davidoff brand was originally made in Cuba before Zino moved production to the Dominican Republic in 1991. To this day, Cuban Davidoff cigars are some of the most expensive and sought after in the world.

The Davidoff Millennium Lancero Limited Edition 2023 wasn't quite what I expected from Davidoff. A more intense and spicy cigar that seems to be a departure from the historical flavor combinations that Davidoff tends to blend for. The first and second thirds were the most engaging, with the last third becoming unbalanced as it heated up. I would happily smoke the Davidoff Millennium Lancero Limited Edition 2023 again if I had the opportunity.
