Blind Man's Puff · Mar 29, 2023 · November 2022
Davidoff is among the companies that has been making Chinese Calendar, or Zodiac-themed cigars for the last few years. In fact, Davidoff was one of the first. The Davidoff Year of the Rabbit Limited Edition 2023 is actually one of two cigars made by the company celebrating the Chinese Zodiac calendar in 2022. The other was the Limited Edition 2023 Year of the Rabbit Flagship Exclusive that uses a different blend and vitola along with completely different packaging. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Davidoff has been selling the Zodiac Series since 2012 with the Year of the Dragon has released a new version annually ever since with packaging designed to highlight traits about the individual animal on the Zodiac calendar. The Davidoff Year of the Rabbit Limited Edition 2023 is a perfecto that measures 5 15/16 x 54 and comes packaged in boxes with gold-on-red colors. The lacquered exterior has an etched pattern meant to look like a rabbit hopping and the 10 cigars are laid out in a manner that is meant to look like a rabbit’s warren, which are the connecting burrows dug underground. The blend uses an Ecuadorian hybrid 238 wrapper, Mexican San Andrés negro binder, fillers from the Dominican Republic: piloto seco, San Vicente ligero, San Vicente seco and Yamasá viso, and Estelí, Nicaragua. The company says the average age of the filler tobacco is four and a half years. Each cigar has an MSRP of $50 per cigar, the most expensive of the Zodiac Series cigars to date. Production is limited to 6,500 boxes of 10 cigars in the U.S. market.

Having recently smoked three cigars for a review that would not burn and were tight with their flavors, smoking the Davidoff Limited Edition 2023 Year of the Rabbit was a welcomed experience that reminded me of just how good a cigar can be. It starts from the first puffs, which have the kind of welcoming greeting that I'd expect to find at a classy business. The flavor steadily develops from there, adding complexity while maintaining balance and keeping the profile on a near-constant journey of subtle additions and subtractions, doing so with near perfect handoffs from one puff to the next. My only real note on the flavor is the shift in the pepper that occurs in the second half of the cigar, which can get just a bit biting for my palate, but never reaching a point of adversely affecting the overall profile. This is simply a fantastic cigar, and one that I wish I had more of sitting in my humidor.

The Davidoff Year of the Pig Limited Edition 2019 is a brilliant blend of tobaccos that offers up about two-and-a-half hours of smoking enjoyment. It hits you with flavor immediately and does not let up. It’s complex and balanced and beautiful, but it’s also overpriced—there’s just no other way of saying it. That being said, the longer you smoke it, the harder it gets to be mad at the cost.

A fat cigar with a notably round head and a wrapper that shows an oily gleam. Initial impressions of walnut and chocolate are accented by hints of honeyed wood, almond and leather before the warm, toasty finish. Combustion and draw remain even and substantial.

Developing Palates · May 24, 2023 · November 2022
The Davidoff Year of the Rabbit Limited Edition 2023 had a complex profile through the first two thirds and then became less dynamic in the final third. It really amped up the profile from multiple blends the company has employed previously. This is a cigar I'd definitely come back to, but the high price point is a bit of a detractor. Nice to see a step back up for the Year of series.

An interesting experience – the first 2 cm don’t have a wrapper. Wood and herbal aromas dominate. As soon as the wrapper joins the blend, the cigar becomes creamier, sweeter, citrusy, spicier, and has notes of salted caramel.
