Diesel Estelí Puro Robusto
Blind Man's Puff · Nov 18, 2020 · September 2020
General Cigar announced a new regular production line from Diesel this August, “ Estelí Puro.” This cigar is blended entirely with tobacco from the Nicaraguan region of Estelí, hence the name. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The wrapper comes from AJ Fernandez ‘s La Lilia farm, while the binder is from San José, and the fillers are from several plots including AJ’s San Lotano farm. It is of course blended by AJ Fernandez and rolled at his factory Tabacalera AJ Fernandez Cigars de Nicaragua S.A. in Estelí, Nicaragua. It was developed with General Cigar Brand Manager Justin Andrews. Diesel Estelí Puro comes in three vitolas in 20 count boxes: Robusto 5.25” x 54 $8.99, Toro 6” x 54 $9.49, Gigante 6” x 60 per cigar $9.99.

Diesel Esteli Puro cigars first became available at cigar retailers in September 2020. These cigars are a collaboration between AJ Fernandez and General Cigar, and are made in Nicaragua with tobaccos from AJ's farms in Esteli. Diesel Esteli Puro cigars are available in three sizes: Robusto (5.25 x 54) – SRP per cigar $8.99Toro (6 x 54) – SRP per cigar $9.49Gigante (6 x 60) – SRP per cigar $9.99 For more information about these cigars, please see thepress release. The Robusto size was sampled for this review. Before lighting up my first sample, I was anticipating another very bold cigar similar to theDiesel Deliriumthat I reviewed back in March 2020. Although both Diesel cigars were blended by AJ Fernandez and have some similarities as described in the press releases, the tobaccos used for each cigar are not the same. In addition, the Delirium was a limited edition release, while the Esteli Puro is a full-time addition to the Diesel lineup. I was pleasantly surprised by the Diesel Esteli Puro Robusto. It was a very balanced smoke and not at all overpowering nor excessively bold. The body hovered near the upper limit of the medium-to-full range. The smooth texture of the smoke may have tempered or masked some the boldness, making the Esteli Puro more palatable to a wider range of cigar connoisseurs, and not to just a small group of hardcore cigar extremists. The cigar began with a sweet peppery taste, but the pepper faded after the first few puffs. After that, very enjoyable rich and naturally sweet tobacco flavors were accompanied by notes of cedar and exquisite spices lurking in the background. The cigar was very well made and had a great draw, even burn, and held a long ash. No relights were needed, but I did apply a couple of minor touch-ups along the way. It took me an hour to smoke the cigar down to two inches remaining. Overall, I found the Diesel Esteli Puro to be a great cigar worthy of an excellent rating of 4.5 points on a 5-point scale. The Robustos are a very good value at $8.99 per stick. Not intended for newbies, these cigars are strongly recommended for cigar aficionados.

Gleaming with oil, this robusto draws and burns quite evenly, imparting straightforward notes of coffee, wood and nuts. A touch of mint springs up before the creamy finish.

In 2020, the Diesel Cigar brand would introduce a new regular production offering known as the Diesel Estelí Puro. Diesel is a brand that has a long history with Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG). It’s a brand that STG has partnered with AJ Fernandez on for many years. In 2017 STG moved the brand into the […] Key flavors: Earth, Orange Peel, Pepper, Cedar, Wood.

Halfwheel · Nov 1, 2021 · Sept. 1, 2020
After finishing my original review of the Diesel Estelí Puro, the cigar was immediately added to a list that I should redux at some point down the line, mostly to see if a bit of age would tame some of the overwhelming strength in the final third as well as the large amounts of spice and black pepper, all of which did a good job drowning out some of the nuanced flavors in the profile during the original review. Unfortunately, a year later, not much has changed: while the somewhat different core flavors and sweetness on the retrohale seem to shine through a bit more, there is still too much spice, too much pepper and the strength remains aggressive in the final third for me to enjoy the cigar all the way through.

Developing Palates · Jan 4, 2021 · September 2020
The Diesel Estelí Puro Robusto was a medium-full to full bodied experience that didn't skimp on complexity through the first and second thirds. This is the essence of the Diesel brand that I came to enjoy many, many years ago. What I appreciated is that the cigar brought intensity and strength, but didn't do it at the expense of a range of flavors.
