Just before the PCA tradeshow this year, STG and Forged Cigar Company announced the new Diesel Vintage Series. This new regular production line comes in 5 sizes, and uses a maduro wrapper. It was rolled like all other Diesel cigars at Tabacalera AJ Fernandez in Estelí, Nicaragua. The blend was a collaboration between AJ Fernandez and STG’s Justin Andrews. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. With Vintage Series, we’ve responded to feedback from our valued retailers across the country who told us they wanted to give their customers the true experience of vintage tobacco in a well-crafted, premium smoke. The catch was that it had to be at just the right price point. I’m proud to say that AJ Fernandez and I have delivered a cigar that fires on all cylinders: quality, construction, complexity and price. Justin Andrews The blend uses a Mexican San Andreas Négro wrapper, Nicaraguan binder from Esteli, and Nicaraguan Jalapa filler tobaccos ranging in age from five to eight years. The sizes are: Gigante Nub 4.5” x 60 MSRP $8.79, Robusto Gordo 5” x 56 MSRP $7.79, Toro 6” x 52 MSRP $7.99, Double Corona 7.75” x 49 MSRP $8.79, and Rabito 6” x 46 MSRP $9.29. All sizes of Diesel Vintage Series come in 20-count boxes except for “Rabito” which comes in a box of 10 Diesel Cigars are distributed by the Forged Cigar Company.

If the other two cigars smoked like the final cigar, this would a different review with a different score, though I’m not sure I’d be any more motivated to smoke another one of these. Draw issues aside, this just got to be too strong for me to finish without feeling uncomfortable. Had I stopped right as the final third began, I would have felt fine and avoided any need to rest, but I'd still feel like I got a cigar that had, at best, good flavor and mixed construction. The most unique part was the finish of the first third, when the flavors seemed to hit the taste receptors in an orderly fashion, one after another. Unfortunately, if I wasn’t smoking this cigar for review, there’s no chance I’d pick up that detail. And even if that was something that could be guaranteed to be replicated again, I wouldn't trade how I felt for the half hour after I finished smoking the cigar just to experience that one more time.

Diesel Vintage Series is a unique cigar with its well-aged tobacco, production by a great factory, and attractive price point. On paper, this cigar seems like it should be a winner. However, the flavors were a bit dull at times throughout the smoke, and aromas of an old leather workshop / antique wood furniture store are at times unpleasant. The retrohale holds to the level of spice expected from Nicaraguan leaf—it's good, but not unique. Ultimately, the overall smoking experience did not quite live up to the concept on paper, with the exception of the price tag.

The Diesel Vintage Series Robusto Gordo started with a nice profile as the mellow cocoa note provided a welcome support note. Once that dropped out in the second third, the profile took a step down and remained that way the rest of the way. This blend is pretty on par with the Natural version of the line and these two cigars are probably my favorites from Diesel. But even with that being said, they aren't good enough to really make me want to come back to them. The price is great, so they are easy to try though to see what you think.
