General Cigar came out with new Diesel Cigar for the holiday season in 2020: Whiskey Row Sherry Cask Barber Pole. Released in only one size, a 5” x 56 double robusto the blend uses the Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper from the original Sherry Cask cigar along with a portion of Connecticut Shade wrapper. The box is a branded and bonded tiny whiskey barrel. Justin Andrews came up with the idea for this cigar and it was blended by AJ Fernandez. Whiskey Row Sherry Cask Barber Pole was rolled at Tabacalera AJ Fernandez in Estelí. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The Diesel Whiskey Row Sherry Cask blend uses a unique and proprietary aging process created by AJ Fernandez that barrel-ages the Brazilian Alagoas Arapiraca binder leaf in Rabbit Hole’s Pedro Ximénez Sherry barrels before being rolled. The wooden whiskey barrel boxes each contain ten cigars and include a lid that can also be used as an ashtray while smoking. This is a limited production cigar, but specific production numbers weren’t given. Each box sells for $124.99.

It’s fitting that we round this list out with an AJ-made cigar. This follow-up to the original Whiskey Row is also the result of a partnership between General Cigar and Louisville-based Rabbit Hole Distilling. Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks are used to fin-ish Rabbit Hole bourbon before they finish this cigar’s Arapiraca binder.

The thing I ponder as I smoke this cigar is the definition of an infused cigar. Typical tobacco fermentation is done with the leaves being stacked in great heaps (pilónes), where the weight of the leaves themselves creates pressure and heat, allowing the leaf to transform. Flavors develop as a result of natural processes, all on their own. An infused/flavored cigar has flavors added to the leaves following fermentation. The process of barrel aging sort of sits in between (albeit much more to the natural side than the additive side), where there is certainly an outside influence on the tobacco. Call it an aging technique (just as nearly all cigars are aged against cedar), or call it an infusion (the cigar makers definitely don’t), but either way the result is undeniable. And it’s good. There’s a reason that many of life's best luxuries are aged in oak and, in my opinion, this cigar is an excellent expression of this age-old practice.

After a bit of a sour start, the Diesel Whiskey Row Sherry Cask Holiday Edition finds its footing nicely in the second and final thirds, becoming a very enjoyable cigar. This is partly due to the wonderful creaminess in the profile that combines so well with the dominant oak and cocoa nib flavors, but I would be remiss if I did not mention the excellent construction that made the physical act of smoking this cigar so enjoyable. Having said all of that, a bit more sweetness would have really helped to balance the woody and dark chocolate notes that never came close to losing their grip on the profile, and the aforementioned sourness in the first third was both disconcerting and off-putting, albeit only for a short time.

Diesel's Whiskey Row Sherry Cask blend for the 2020 holiday season is a barber pole wrapped cigar available only in the Gordo size (5 x 56). The cigar is made with both Connecticut Broadleaf and Shade wrappers, a Brazilian binder and a blend of Nicaraguan Habano filler leaves. These cigars were blended by AJ Fernandez, and the binder leaves were aged in Sherry barrels via AJ's proprietary process. Diesel Sherry Cask 2020 Holiday cigars became available during October 2020, and are sold in wooden whiskey barrels containing 10 cigars, which retail for $125. The blend of the Diesel Sherry Cask 2020 Holiday cigar is the same as the original Diesel Sherry Cask cigar released in 2019, but with the addition of a Connecticut wrapper to form a barber-pole style cigar. I was not a big fan of the original, but I found the new Holiday blend to be more balanced and enjoyable. The cigar started off with a modest sweet peppery taste, which quickly developed into a leathery creamy flavor along with some spice and hints of sweetness. The cigar was medium-to-full bodied, and did not become overpowering during the second half, as did the original. The Diesel Whiskey Row Sherry Cask Holiday 2020 cigar was very well made and had a good draw, mostly even burn, and held a medium-to-long ash. It took me 65 minutes to smoke the cigar down to two inches remaining, with one relight after the first 45 minutes. I rate it with a very good 4 points on a 5-point scale. Note that these cigars are only sold in limited edition tabletop wooden whiskey barrels containing 10 cigars (which would make for a great holiday gift). It shows tons of sweetness and spice. You are getting those noticeable oaky flavors along with those sweet Sherry flavors. The Diesel Whiskey Row Sherry Cask Robusto is enjoyable on it's own, but I think it was meant to be smoked with some bourbon.
