Having smoked at least one of five different vitolas in the MUWAT Kentucky Fire Cured line, I can honestly say I was shocked at how much I liked the Delfinas vitola. The signature beef jerky/barbecue note that this brand is known for—and frankly, that is so prevalent in some of the other vitolas as to destroy virtually any other flavors that could possibly be present—is both understated and well balanced in this size, adding complexity to the profile instead of taking it away. The construction was excellent on all counts, with a razor sharp burn and a draw that feature just enough resistance. In the end, this is an easy cigar for me to recommend, especially if you had problems with the profile of some of the larger sizes of the Kentucky Fire Cured line as I did.

In a sense, it isn't truly fair to give Kentucky Fire Cured Swamp Thang the classic review/rating, as the cigar doesn't really fit the mold of a traditional cigar smoking experience. But in another sense, this is our job; helping to guide the cigar smoker's purchase inclinations. Therefore, we suggest you look more towards our experience rather the final numerical rating, as this was a fun experiment for the enthusiast in constant search of new challenges for the taste buds! Construction-wise, Swamp Thang performed admirably—you really couldn't ask for much more in a stick of this price. Unfortunately, the flavors didn't meld quite as well as I'd have hoped—offering more of a clear division of "candela on one side and fire-cure on the other," rather my hope for a newfound fusion of the two. Sometimes our palates need an occasional jumpstart to awaken the senses—a palate cleanser, if you will... and in that case, Swamp Thang is just what the doctor ordered.

MUWAT Kentucky Fire Cured

Drew Estate makes some unusual cigars, including natural and flavor infused. Kentucky Fire Cured cigars are a line extension of theirMyUziWeighsATon brand, and although these cigars have some unique flavors because of the way the tobaccos are processed, they smoke more like natural cigars than the flavored category that the FDA may eventually regulate out of existence. Kentucky Fire Cured cigars are made in Nicaragua with some fire cured tobacco from Kentucky and Virginia, along with Nicaraguan and Brazilian fillers, Ecuadorian Connecticut binders, and San Andres Maduro wrappers. The vitola that I sampled was named Fat Molly, which measures five inches in length with a ring gauge of 56. Fat Molly sells for about $8 per single stick, but the price drops down to an average of around $6.50 per cigar when purchased in five or 10-packs. Before firing up the Kentucky Fire Cured MUWAT, the cigar exhibited a strong aroma of barbecue after removing it from the cello. The cigar also gave my fingers that barbecue smell. After finally lighting up, the cigar delivered a sweet woodsy flavor along with a good dose of barbecue and some spice. I found the cigar to be medium bodied, but at the upper end of that range, and not quite medium-to-full. The cigar had a very good draw, burned evenly, and held a medium-to-long ash. No relights nor touch-ups were needed during the 50 minutes that it took me to smoke the cigar down to two inches remaining. The Kentucky Fire Cured cigar had a very interesting and different flavor, to say the least. It would be a great choice of cigars to smoke while grilling in the great outdoors, and/or when sipping on a glass of Jack Daniels or Eagle Rare. But on other occasions, I would have to rate it with a strong 3.75 points on a 5-point scale. The cigar did not overwhelm my palate with barbecue like I thought that it might, and was well balanced. Most definitely worth giving a try, especially at a summer cookout.

This was an interesting experience. The candela wrapper definitely tones down the fire cured tobacco which was nice as I find the original KFC a bit overwhelming after a while.
