This year at the annual PCA trade show, in preparation for fall, Espinosa Premium Cigars introduced the fifth addition to its Las 6 Provincias line, the ZDT, a tribute to Pinar del Río in western Cuba, renowned for its premium cigar tobacco. The blend for ZDT, short for Zona de Tabaco, features a Nicaraguan corojo wrapper, and Nicaraguan binder and fillers. It comes in just one size, a 6 1/2 x 48 short Churchill vitola. Like the rest of the line, it is produced at the San Lotano Factory in Ocotal, Nicaragua. Note: the line was originally supposed to be called the PDR (which is reflected in the pictures), for Pinar del Rio, but was later changed to ZDT because of trademark issues with the PDR Cigar Company. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. In line with Las 6 Provincias ‘ unconventional packaging, the ZDT cigars are presented in a ceramic jar adorned with artwork by Eden Gutierrez, depicting the cigar-making process. The Las 6 Provincias line, which started all the way back in 2018, pays homage to the original six provinces of Cuba through art and cigars. La Habana, Matanzas, Las Villas, and Camagüey have already been honored, setting the stage for one more province, Oriente, the sixth installment. The Las 6 Provincias ZDT is priced at $18.00 MSRP per cigar or $360 for the 20-count ceramic jar. Production numbers for this version are undisclosed.

Espinosa Las 6 Provincias LHB makes a bold statement from Espinosa Premium Cigars, catapulting to the top of the brand's lineup to become their most expensive offering. This is accomplished through the use of a dark Ecuadorian Habano 2000 wrapper and an all-Nicaraguan interior (the latter being a signature style from Espinosa). The cigar is themed around the pre-revolution La Habana province of Cuba, but the resulting smoking experience is not necessarily in line with a cigar you might expect to smoke from this region. Instead, smokers are presented with a spicy beginning, eventually evolving to include raw sugar sweetness and deep fruit juice, and a nicotine-heavy finish, backed by clove-like spices and other dark flavors. It's an all-around impressive addition to the Espinosa portfolio, becoming the most noteworthy offering since the company's fan-favorite Laranja Reserva in 2014 ( Cigar Dojo's No. 2 Cigar of the Year for 2014).

After smoking the first Espinosa Las 6 Provincias CMW, I was a bit concerned that the better parts of the cigar might be overshadowed by roughness and irritation, but the other two samples showed that was an isolated experience. Once the cigar burns through its first half inch or so and the flavors are given time to identify themselves and the palate has time to familiarize itself with what the cigar has to offer, the flavor journey proves to be quite enjoyable. Like a number of cigars I have had lately, this one starts vibrant in flavor but shines when the amplitude is turned down just a bit and my taste buds and mind can see how they work together, sometimes being complementary and balancing, sometimes contrasting and competitive. After smoking three samples, I’m not inclined to let the rougher spots of the first sample cast too long of a shadow on my impressions of the Espinosa Las 6 Provincias CMW, as I would certainly welcome the opportunity to light up another one of these before long.

The Espinosa Las 6 Provincias CMW had cemented itself as my favorite Las 6 Provincias release by the end of the first third. Rich, complex and intense, the cigar is full bodied and full strength through the majority of the review, stepping down to medium at a few points in the second third to allow my palate to recover. I'll be seeking out a box of the Espinosa Las 6 Provincias CMW, so it's reasonable to say I'll be looking forward to smoking this again.
