Gurkha Nicaragua Series
Cigar Snob · Jan 4, 2023
This company, synonymous with opulent packaging and killer swag, returns to our annual best of the best with one of their more understated brands. The Gurkha Nicaragua has proven to be a consistently flavorful blend with a core of cedar, pepper, cocoa, and baking spice balanced by a rich, creamy sweetness throughout the smoke.

While the Tabacos Valle de Jalapa S.A. factory makes plenty of cigars that are similar to what the Gurkha Nicaragua Series TAA 2021 offered, I haven’t smoked many of those cigars lately. The newer cigars from the factory that I’ve been reviewing have been decidedly different than this profile and I think this isn’t the type of cigars for which the factory is known. While it’s neither mild nor boring, this was very restrained. I doubt it was the actual intent, but the end result is a profile that seems like balance was prioritized over just about anything else. Sometimes that can lead to monotonous cigars, but that wasn’t the case here. There were not only three distinct chapters of the cigar, there was enough complexity within each chapter that I was never close to being bored. For reasons righteous and otherwise, Gurkha’s reputation for the cigars it sells is not as strong as other companies but that hardly means every cigar the company sells is bad. This limited size of the Gurkha Nicaragua Series is probably one of the company’s best cigars and it’s one that I think just about any company would be glad to have in its portfolio.

Blind Man's Puff · Jan 4, 2021 · October 2019
Gurkha showed off the Nicaragua Series at IPCPR 2019 and it shipped that October. At launch, it was only sold to Gurkha ‘s top retailers and each got a maximum of 5 boxes per size. Other retailers received them in 2020. This was the second of now three collaborations between Gurkha Cigars and Aganorsa Leaf. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The cigars were blended and rolled at Tabacos Valle de Jalapa S.A. (TABSA), the factory owned by Aganorsa Leaf. The blend for the Gurkha Nicaragua Series is a Nicaraguan Puro that uses a Aganorsa corojo 99 Clara wrapper from Nicaragua, Corojo 99 Aganorsa double binder, and Corojo 99 and Criollo 98 Aganorsa filler tobacco. It is described at medium to 3/4 full bodied. It comes in four sizes: Robusto (5×52) – $9.75, Toro (6×54) – $9.95, Magnum (6×60) – $10.95, Belicoso (6 1/8 x 52) – $10.95. All are sold in boxes of 20.

In 2021, Gurkha Cigars would release its second exclusive cigar to the Tobacconists Association of America (TAA). The cigar would be a perfecto-shaped line extension to the Gurkha Nicaragua Series. The Gurkha Nicaragua Series would make its debut in 2019. It would be one of the first projects that Gurkha worked on with Aganorsa Leaf’s […] Key flavors: Natural Tobacco, Raisin, Caramel Apple, Earth, Pepper.

Solid to the touch, this cigar is packed with tobacco resulting in a slightly firm draw, but it delivers a cool, slow burn. This is a woody, nutty smoke with notes of walnut and almond. A fruity, floral mid-palate leads to a citrus finish.

I have to give Gurkha credit, they identified a segment of the market that they could capture and made the right moves to begin opening the door for craft-minded enthusiasts. While not being a particularly memorable first outing with their newfound TABSA partner, the Gurkha Nicaragua Series had moments of glory, enough so that I am more optimistic about their future endeavors than ever before.

The Gurkha Nicaragua Series Toro was fairly average throughout and didn't provide much in the way of exciting moments. It's interesting to see an Aganorsa sourced blend for the brand and we'll see if this leads to more offerings. If so, I would be interested to try them, but for this cigar, it's not something I see myself returning to.
