Among the fattest cigars in the Hoyo Excalibur line, the Excalibur Epicure is a 50-ring cigar measuring 5 1/4 inches long. General Cigar Co. makes the cigars in its Villazon unit in Honduras, which is also home to the Punch brand. Angel Daniel Núñez, General's president and chief operating officer, walks the company's vast tobacco fields and visits each of its myriad cigar factories as he oversees production of General's entire line. In maduro wrapper, the Epicure is a gem, a rare combination of two leaves of dark Connecticut broadleaf (one for the wrapper, one for the binder) around a bold filler blend combining Honduran, Nicaraguan and Dominican tobaccos. It's a leathery, earthy cigar with plenty of sweet cocoa and coffee flavor. It's also an undeniable bargain, one of the least expensive cigars on this list.

In May of 2021, General Cigar announced Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur Black, a new full time addition to the Excalibur line. The Hoyo brand has been produced in Honduras for 40 years, and this latest addition marks on of its strongest offerings to date. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend for Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur Black uses a USA Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, Ecuadoran Sumatra binder, and Honduran and Nicaraguan ligero filler. Excalibur Black is produced at General Cigar ‘s HATSA factory in Danli, Honduras. Excalibur Black comes in three sizes: Robusto (5 x 50) MSRP per cigar $8.49, Toro (6 x 52) MSRP per cigar $8.69, and No. 1 (7.25 x 54) MSRP per cigar $8.99. All are presented in 20 count boxes.

Going into the review of the Hoyo de Monterrey The Illusione of Excalibur No. 1 was a bit intimidating given it's large size and ring gauge. Fortunately, the flavor balance found the right point between engaging flavors without being palate fatiguing, which is challenging on a larger cigar. The first third and the second thirds were the most engaging, with the last third being pleasant, but not quite as complex as the rest of the cigar.
