The HVC 500 Years Anniversary was made to celebrate to anniversary of the city Havana, Cuba. The cigar went on to take the #7 spot in our 25 top cigars of 2019 list. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. HVC ‘s Reinier Lorenzo created the blend, a Nicaraguan puro with all AGANORSA tobacco with a corojo 99 wrapper from Jalapa, undisclosed binder from Jalapa, and criollo 98 and corojo 99 fillers from Jalapa from Estelí. When released, it came in one size, a 5 7/8 x 52 toro, called the Tesoros in the factories but is also known as a Cañonazo. Only 1,333 boxes of 15 were made in 2019. Earlier this year, the company announced two new sizes to the line, a 4 1/2×52 SHORTS and a 5 5/8×46 SELECTOS. The SHORTS is exclusive to online stores, and SELECTOS exclusive to brick and mortar. There are only 1200 boxes made of new sizes. All sizes are made at TABSA, Tabacos Valle de Jalapa S.A. in Esteli Nicaragua.

HVC has been able to give their own spin on the Cuban flavor profile, delivering flavors of old in an experience that has a more flavor-forward and robust mouthfeel. This cigar exemplifies complexity as it continues to develop and strengthen in flavor as it smokes.

The HVC 500 Years Anniversary is a beautiful cigar that comes in a beautiful box and smokes as good—if not better—than it looks to the eye. Other than a bit of roughness in the first third, the cigar's profile is marked by lush creaminess and nuttiness that gets highlighted by some bright, vibrant pepper that shines both on the palate and through the nose on retrohales. Most impressive is how the cigar finds its balance after the first third and moves gracefully from there, never jumping too far from its core but never remaining monotonous. The experience is capped off by nearly flawless construction, with plenty of smoke, a very even burn line, and just the right amount of resistance on the draw. While I won't attempt to rank it among Reinier Lorenzo's other creations, this is certainly about as good of a cigar as I can remember from HVC and one I would highly recommend.

I was incredibly pleased with the HVC 500 Years Anniversary and would consider it one of their best cigars. In some ways, he truly created a cigar that honors Havana. With wonderful packaging and aging potential, this is a cigar to buy boxes of to smoke now and age.
