HVC’s First Selection Broadleaf marks the first time the Aganorsa factory has used this Maduro wrapper…and it’s one of the best things from that factory!

This is a beautiful expression of Broadleaf. It is a flavor journey. I’ve smoked a few since I took my notes for this review, and every time I felt like Frodo taking his first step out of the Shire. With that said, this is not an everyday smoke, in my opinion. However, when I want to go on a Broadleaf journey, I know I can fire up an HVC First Selection Broadleaf and I will not be disappointed.

HVC announced the First Selection Limited Edition Broadleaf at the 2018 IPCPR. This is the first HVC cigar to use a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper. This is in fact the first broadleaf cigar to come out of TABSA. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend uses a broadleaf viso wrapper with a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan fillers from AGANORSA. It comes in two Short Robusto (4 1/2 x 52) — $9.50, Toro (6 x 52) — $11.50. The cigars are only offered in boxes of 20 with 10 of each size. The cigars are rolled at Tabacos Valle de Jalapa S.A. (TABSA) factory in Estelí. There were only 500 boxes made and began shipping September.

I’m not really sure what to make of the HVC First Selection Broadleaf. For as good as the draw on the first cigar was, the final cigar got very tough to smoke, to the point where I stopped smoking it well before I normally would have stopped due to the tightness. Even beyond that, the flavors were not what I’ve come to like in HVC’s better blends, namely the La Rosa 520. While there was finesse in terms of the detail and unique flavors, it lacked the harmony that so oftentimes comes with the company’s cigars. I’m curious to smoke the other size to see if that helps things, but for now, I’ll just wait to see what the upcoming La Rosa 520 Maduro tastes like.

This is what Broadleaf over Nicaraguan tobacco is all about. The HVC First Selection Broadleaf Toro is complex while showing transitioning and smoking at a medium-full level. You can't ask for more out of a Broadleaf release.
