As tasty as it looks, this oily, reddish robusto is a bold balance of leather, oak and dark chocolate. A well-pronounced almond note emerges and reverberates on the finish.

When I was visiting the HVC Cigars booth at the 2022 PCA Convention & Trade Show, Reinier Lorenzo—founder of HVC—was handing out samples of his newest line to retailers and telling people, “after dinner.” His point is that the HVC Selección No. 1 is strong, and I will certainly agree! Reinier explained that the Selección Read more about Cigar Review: HVC Selección No. 1 Poderosos – Rated 92[…]

The HVC brand caught our eye in 2017 when the San Isidro scored 92 points and finished the year 15 th on our list. That cigar, like most HVC products, was produced at the Aganorsa factory but this year’s entrant is made at HVC’s own factory in Nicaragua. It’s a huge step for the company but its place on this list proves they’re off to a great start.

Just when you think you know what HVC's all about, Reinier Lorenzo comes outta' left field like Leeroy Jenkins and introduces a stunner smoke from his own boutique factory. On paper, the HVC Selección No. 1 Esenciales has similar ingredients to other HVC cigars before it: Mexican San Andrés maduro wrapper over all-Nicaraguan binder/filler. Of course, it's that semi-specific Nicaraguan core that allows room for HVC to play. The cigar hits the ground running, bursting onto the palate with loads of flavor and keeping your attention through the last puff (which can easily be taken down to the nub, by the way). There are interesting transitions along the way, and the construction remains maintenance free throughout. All this and the cigar is priced to move—this is one that can easily be added to the maduro hobbyist's (or any cigar hobbyist, for that matter) regular rotation.

The first HVC Selección No.1 Connecticut Short Robusto is one of the best cigars I’ve smoked for review all year. While it wasn’t able to provide dynamic changes in each third, the flavor profile was very dynamic and uniquely viscous. At times, the third cigar came close to matching that excellence, but the second cigar was a few levels down in both flavor and construction, though still a good cigar. The composite of all three was a very good cigar, one of the best new HVCs I've smoked in quite some time and one of the best new cigars I've smoked this year. Unless you are in need of a cigar with a nicotine kick or a flavored cigar, I think this will be a great option for just about any of our readers.

Back in 2022, HVC Cigars released a San Andres wrapper offering known as the HVC Selección No. 1. While HVC Cigars has been a company in business for over a decade, the No. 1 is significant. This is because, in 2022, HVC Cigars moved into its own factory, Fabrica de Tabacos HVC S.A. Before that, […] Key flavors: Natural Tobacco, Earth Cedar, Fruit, Pepper.

HVC Cigars produced and sold the first cigar made in their own brand new factory last year, the HVC Selección No. 1. Earlier this year, the company released a follow-up to that blend, the HVC Selección No. 1 Natural. The HVC Seleccion No 1. Natural uses an Ecuadoria Habano 92 seed wrapper, and binders and fillers from the Esteli and Jalapa regions of Nicaragua. It comes packaged in old school bright yellow box a throwback to owner Reinier Lorenzo ‘s Cuban roots. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The cigar comes in the same sizes as the original HVC Selección No. 1 (now called HVC Selección No. 1 Maduro): Esenciales 46 x 5 5/8 retail price $8.40, Short robusto 52 x 4 ½ retail price $9.30, and Poderosos 54 x 6 retail price $10.40. They all are packaged in boxes of 20 and are produced at Frabrica de tabacos HVC S.A de Reinier Lorenzo.

This HVC Selección No. 1 Esenciales was a really good cigar, and a cigar I would come back to over and over again. A strong cigar that has a flavor profile to my liking as well. Wood, leather, earth and cocoa qualities. Lots of pepper. I would smoke these all the time. Bring it on first thing in the morning. With that being said, this cigar lingers on the palate after smoking. It is great to see some awesome corona gordas released in 2022.
