With HVC being one of the first brands to embrace the winning combination of the TABSA factory and AGANORSA puro blend styles, I find myself shocked and, quite honestly, ashamed at my lack of experience within the company's portfolio. Serie A makes the bold assertion that it contains strictly grade-A tobaccos throughout the blend. With a sub-ten-dollar price point, this will have some skeptical. But the proof is in the pudding, as the cigar smokes with all the flavor, complexity, and construction of something twice its price point. This is a cigar that makes a world of difference when tuning out all the noise. Smoking it a few times casually, I had the assumption it was an above-average experience. But smoking the Serie A with complete focus opened up flavor combinations on an entirely different level. The profile is loaded with sugary flavors (many revolving around Italian cookies) and, when combined with the "it factor" waxy texture, it becomes an absolute must-buy; especially for those with a bit of a sweet tooth.

HVC Cigars came out with two new cigars last year, the 500th Anniversary and the Serie A. The 500th Anniversary made out Top 25 and score a 93 in our blind test. The Serie A is a more economically priced cigar. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The name Serie A comes from the grade of tobacco used in this blend. The blend uses grade A tobacco that all comes from Aganorsa Nicaraguan farms. This blend includes a corojo 99 wrapper, and Nicaraguan binder and filler. The cigars are rolled like all other HVC Cigars at Tabacos Valle de Jalapa S.A. (TABSA) in Estelí, Nicaragua. HVC Serie A comes in three sizes: Robusto (5 x 50) – $9.60, Cañonazos (5 1/2 x 54) – $9.60, and Perlas (5 5/8 x 46) – $8.50. All come in 10 count boxes.

If there is one thing that I will remember about the HVC Serie A Short Toro, it is the brute strength of nicotine that it packs. The first cigar hit me like an absolute truck, and the next two didn't quite run me over, but certainly hit me harder than almost any cigar I can think of in recent memory. But beyond the strength, the cigar does have a lot of good flavor, particularly showcasing the flavors of corojo 99 with a vibrant cedar and pepper combination that are constant threads throughout each cigar and the three samples. What is most interesting is the varied amount of creaminess, and when it's there in its most abundant amounts, the overall profile is quite good and impressively complex. If you decide to light one of these up, be prepared for more strength than you might expect, as well as a flavor that just might make the ride the HVC Serie A Short Toro offers one worth taking.

Like the majority of HVC's offerings, the HVC Serie A Perlas is yet another good example of a solid cigar. The use of quality Aganorsa tobacco honestly speaks for itself. The flavors of sweet buttered bread, nuts, fresh red pepper spice, barnyard, cedar and tannins were great, especially within the first third in which the profile was direct and focused.
