Finely-rolled with tight seams and excellent draw with just a half-tick of tension through-out. Somewheres twixt minimal and moderate veins. Burns straight with a slight ribboning not nearly needing re-direction. From there grows a tightly-wound sheath of pale-grey silvery ash which begins with a cleave of a crack but quickly corrects. Burns at an excellent pacing. Delivers cool smoke down to its well-formed nub. White pepper Cedar Applejack* Cinnamon raisin toast Grapefruit Jellybean (fruity-on

The brand La Gloria Cubana was originally a Cuban cigar brand. The non-cuban version was started in 1972 by Ernesto Perez-Carrillo Sr., the father the E.P. Carrillo that still makes cigars today. In 1999 Ernesto Perez-Carrillo Jr. sold the brand to General Cigar and remained with the company till 2009. While this isn’t the first time E.P. Carrillo has came back to do a cigar with General under the La Gloria Cubana name, the Coleccion Reserva is the first one to be made in his factory Tabacalera La Alianza. The blend uses an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper and binder and filler coming from Nicaragua. The line is available in three sizes: Robusto 5 1/2 x 54 – $7.59 msrp, Torpedo 6 x 54 – $8.29 msrp, and Presidente 7 1/2 x 54 – $8.99 msrp. All come in boxes of 20 count. Cigar Dojo · Nov 14, 2017
Capitalizing on the current “collaborative trend” in the cigar industry, La Gloria Cubana recently partnered with company founder Ernesto Pérez-Carrillo to create the Colección Reserva. Produced in three sizes, including the robusto smoked for review, the blend is composed with an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, a Nicaraguan viso binder, and limited-availability Nicaraguan seco and ligero filler leaves. Using the initial La Gloria Cubana smoking profile as inspiration, Pérez-Carrillo has created a very affordable cigar that delivers aromas and flavors of assorted nuts, berry, cedar, chocolate, coffee, natural tobacco, toast, and spice. It can be enjoyed by both the novice and the more experienced cigar enthusiast.

I've heard the La Gloria Cubana Colección Reserva referred to as one of the sleeper hits of the 2017 IPCPR Convention & Trade Show, and after smoking three of them, I'd have to say I agree. The blend is quite friendly to the palate, and while not the most complex I've smoked, offers more than enough flavor to be engaging, with retrohales providing a somewhat disjointed but still complementary experience that is rich in pepper yet balanced enough to rarely overstep. Technical performance only helped this cigar, as each sample burned near flawlessly. I'm definitely impressed by this cigar and intrigued to try the other two sizes to see if the parejo shape and variations in length have any appreciable effect, or if the blend is just as enjoyable in those other formats.

Covered in a streaky, dark wrapper, this large cigar has a spicy, leathery start opening up to show notes of walnut and toast. The finish is light and herbal.

I'm pleasantly surprised by this cigar. Luckily, with the talented blending skills of Ernesto Perez-Carrillo (and Jhonys Diaz), this brand is worth giving a serious look. A definite fly under the radar cigar that I will happily smoke more of in the future.

La Gloria Cubana Coleccion Reserva cigars are made by Ernesto Perez-Carrillo in collaboration with General Cigar. Excellent pre-light draw, nothing exceptional about the aroma. It has a nice dark natural wrapper, very smooth in the roll but consistent throughout the stick and not too solid and no soft spots. Toasting the foot yields a woodsy aroma and after 5 minutes a slightly uneven burn. Initial flavors are coffee, cocoa and black pepper on the retro-hale. This cigar has a nice smoke output. This is a mild/medium cigar with not a very complex profile. Middle of the first third the burn evened out without any touch-up. Near the end of the first third the pepper is now evident in the overall aroma and flavor and remains woodsy with some earthy undertones. I sense some cedar and oak and now some chocolate and graham cracker, almost like a s'more. At the end of the first third the ash is bent and a very slight uneven burn. Middle of the cigar still has the same flavors and aromas with a touch more pepper, maybe some sweetness. I knocked the ash off at the mid-point to avoid it falling in my lap. The final third got a little spicier and I noticed more pepper but the slight sweetness remained constant. The aroma and flavor on the retro-hale, although still spicy the amount was much less. The smoking time was 90 minutes. I personally like cigars that smoke at least that amount of time because I have migrated to smoking better quality cigars. My humidor only holds 25 cigars and right now they are all La Gloria Cubana – Serie R No. 5, Serie N and Artisino. These are not bargain cigars. I actually stopped smoking sticks in that range. The older I get I want to smoke something that I can enjoy more. I don’t do yard work, I don’t tinker in my garage, hey, I’m retired and smoke to relax. Okay, what about the value? This stick cost me $10 at my local shop. You can get them at online shops for much less. I found 5 packs for $35 and boxes of 20 for $115 on sale at Cigars International (normal price is usually $170). This was a very good cigar and worthy of at least a 4 point rating on a 5-point scale.
