Montecristo Espada Oscuro Guard
Blind Man's Puff · Mar 27, 2020 · May 2019
Last year, Altadis’ Grupo de Maestros collaborated once again with the Plasencia family for a sequel to their 2014 Montecristo Espada, the Montecristo Espada Oscuro. As with the original, this blend is a Nicaraguan Puro. This version uses a Habano Rosado Oscuro wrapper instead of the original blend’s Nicaraguan Habano. The wrapper for this blend was chosen by Rafael Nodal, Head of Product Capability for Tabacalera USA. Nodal, Grupo de Maestro Pedro Ventura and the Plasencia family worked together on the blend. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The Montecristo Espada Oscuro comes in three vitolas: Ricasso: 5 x 54 $13.27 MSRP, Guard: 6 x 50 $13.80 MSRP, and Quillon: 7 x 56 $14.60 MSRP. It comes in 10-count boxes.

In 2014, Altadis USA released the Espada by Montecristo. Historically, it was an important cigar in that it was the first Montecristo cigar to come out of Nicaragua, and for Altadis it was one of their first major releases produced by an outside factory which in this case was the Plasencia factory. In addition, the […] Key flavors: Chocolate, Natural Tobacco, Earth, Citrus, Cedar, Malt, Baker’s Spice, Pepper.

This cigar’s standout feature, for me, was its intense strength. While it managed to have a nice, enjoyable balance of flavor and body, it will put you down if you’re not careful. It’s a good cigar with just a little too much to offer in terms of nicotine.

The earthy smoke of this dark and veiny cigar becomes tart and herbal, leaving a charry, over-roasted finish.

Developing Palates · Mar 4, 2020 · June 2019
Like a lot of releases from 2019, the Montecristo Espada Oscuro Guard started out really well and slowly went downhill. A solid Montecristo, nothing to write home about, but a nice addition to a brand that already has way too many releases.
