Monte by Montecristo Jacopo No. 2

Cigar Aficionado · Jan 1, 2015

Altadis U.S.A. Inc. has a library of storied cigar brands. Romeo y Julieta. H. Upmann. Montecristo. These are cigars that people have smoked for decades, and while they have large followings the company has made the ambitious move of taking a hard, new look at each of those landmark brands and offering new versions of each. Monte by Montecristo is a remake that harks back to what Altadis did with Romeo y Julieta in 2012 (you might recall a Romeo by Romeo y Julieta earned our No. 3 spot in the Top 25 that year). The box is sleek and modern, with a new take on the Montecristo name. But the real change lies in the cigar itself. Where most Dominican Montecristos are mild, with Connecticut-seed wrappers, Monte by Montecristo Jacopo is blended with Ecuador Havana wrapper, Dominican filler and two binder leaves, one Dominican olor, the other Nicaraguan Corojo. The box-pressed Jacopo (pronounced HAH-coh-poh) No. 2 size was released in 2013. The cigar has plenty of leather and spice on the palate, with a note of chocolate on the finish. It's a delicious new take on a celebrated old cigar brand.

Monte by Montecristo (Altadis USA)

Cigar Coop · Oct 29, 2013

Monte by Montecristo (Jacopa No. 2) As we have been discussing over the past two years, Altadis USA has working on making their existing lines more contemporary – not just in terms of the packaging, but also in terms of the blends.   This has been seen across the company’s portfolio in terms of blends such […]

Monte by Montecristo AJ Fernandez Belicoso

Blind Man's Puff · Oct 5, 2017 · July 2017

Altadis and AJ Fernandez announced the Monte by Montecristo AJ Fernandez earlier this year. This is the fourth cigar blended and rolled by A.J. Fernández for Altadis U.S.A. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The Monte by Montecristo AJ Fernandez utilizes an Ecuadorian habano wrapper, a corojo 98 binder and criollo 98 and Dominican piloto cubano fillers. It is available in four viotlas: Corona (5 x 44) — $10.50 (Boxes of 20, $210), Belicoso (6 1/8 x 54) — $11.25 (Boxes of 20, $225), Robusto (4 1/4 x 54) — $10.80 (Boxes of 20, $216). Toro (6 x 55) — $11 (Boxes of 20, $220). The cigars is produced at Tabacalera AJ Fernandez Cigars de Nicaragua S.A. and distributed by Altadis U.S.A. A.J. Fernández has blended a few other cigars for Altadis U.S.A. such as, Montecristo, H. Upmann and Gispert.

Montecristo Monte

Holt's Staff Reviews · Dec 7, 2022

Montecristo Monte, sometimes spelled in all caps as simply MONTE, scored 93 points with the critics in Cigar Aficionado and a ‘Top 10’ ranking in 2014 for the Jacopo No. 2, a box-pressed Torpedo just over six inches long with a 54 ring gauge. When the cigar debuted, Altadis U.S.A., the parent of company of the non-Cuban Montecristo and Romeo y Julieta brands, was in the process of revamping its most recognizable brand names with new blends and packaging. Let’s revisit this renewed version of a Cuban-legacy classic to taste its staying power today.

Monte by Montecristo AJ Fernandez Toro

Halfwheel · Aug 24, 2017 · July 2017

The problematic sample not withstanding, this is an okay cigar. It is strong, progressing to very strong at the end, but the flavor just never came together for me. Yes, there were complexities, but they were drowned out by a woody and toasty mixture, save for the final third. A.J. Fernández has become known for making good cigars with equally good, if not better, price points. This simply is not that.

Developing Palates · Aug 16, 2017 · July 2017

Like many of AJ's offerings, I found the cigar profile to be good and construction to be top notch. I can say with confidence, Altadis USA made the right decision in partnering with AJ to create this traditional and beloved marca.

Cigar Journal · Dec 16, 2017 · Top 25 Cigars of 2017: The Complete List (Rank #13)

A very tasty cigar with forest floor, grassy, roasted, and cedary aromas. A complex blend, with notes of fruit, chocolate, and cereals. It is creamy in the smoke, and complex.
