Oscar Valladares Cigars Altar Q
Paying homage to the historic 8th-century Mayan stone monument Altar Q in Copán, Honduras, this historic masterpiece is handcrafted in Danlí. Encased in individual ceremonial wraps representing the sixteen Mayan rulers under an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, it releases an aristocratic medium-bodied smoke overflowing with black and white pepper, warm baking spices, and velvety cream.

Oscar Valladares Altar Q

Oscar Valladares showed off their new Altar Q line at the IPCPR trade show in 2018. Altar Q comes in only one size, a 6×52 toro that uses an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, and binder and filler from Copán, Honduras. It comes in 16-count boxes. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The name comes from a monument found in Copán, Honduras that decodes the history of city. Mayan King Yax Pac hired Altar Q in 776AD to create buildings and monuments that showed his divine right to the throne. Part of this project was a square block with each side featuring four of his predecessors totaling all 16 rulers. The box for the Altar Q cigar is a replica of this monument and each cigar represents one of those 16 rulers, each with their own name on the band. Each footband of that each of the 16 cigars is unique with a different name.

This was certainly an interesting cigar. It demanded attention initially, settled into a complex middle, with a very enjoyable finale. And I have to say that, while I was concerned about what I thought was going to be an under-filled cigar, the construction and burn were near flawless. I’m willing to chalk up the uninspired first sample I smoked to simply not having enough time to acclimate to my desired RH, as the flavors that I initially didn’t care for were able to give structure and complexity to the core after a few more weeks' rest. And while there were moments or flavors that, taken without context, were not something I typically enjoy in a cigar, they took what would’ve otherwise been a significantly less-interesting experience and elevated it to something unique and worth the wait.

It is a bit disconcerting to be reviewing this cigar after thinking and talking about the packaging so much a month ago, but I am glad that I did. The Altar Q by Oscar Valladares starts out extremely creamy and sweet on the palate with just enough spice and white pepper to make it interesting, both of which stick around until the very end. Yes, the blend does get a bit strong towards the end of the close to two hour smoke time—which not only throws off the balance, but also knocked down my enjoyment of the final third significantly—but in the end, the Altar Q matches its extremely impressive background and packaging with a very enjoyable blend.
