Rocky Patel A.L.R. Second Edition Toro
Cigar Aficionado · Jan 1, 2024
This isn’t the first time this exact cigar has been on our Top 25 list. It first appeared in 2019, but back then it was the No. 5. For 2023, it’s moved up a spot, showing us that Rocky Patel continues to improve quality and consistency at his Tavicusa factory in Nicaragua where this cigar is made. The “A.L.R.” in the brand name stands for “Aged, Limited and Rare.” According to Patel, he makes these cigars in very small amounts each year. He also says they’re all aged for two years after rolling. Some might think that this long step is unnecessary, but in the case of the A.L.R. Second Edition Toro, it’s the cigar’s defining factor. The cigar is made with a Mexican wrapper and Nicaraguan tobacco that Patel grew on his farms in Condega and Estelí. It seems that the extra age allowed the tobaccos to marry for an exceptionally harmonious smoke that fully saturates the palate in a luxurious fashion. Rich layers of nutmeg, German chocolate cake and shredded coconut become weightier and more sophisticated with each puff. If you missed this cigar in 2019, we suggest you try it now.

Before we had a chance to try this cigar, Rocky Patel fans were telling us it was the best thing the company had ever made. That’s high praise for a cigar made by a company with so much longevity and such an extensive portfolio. At the very least, we thought, this cigar dressed the part. The name is a straightforward pitch for the cigar, but the band is loaded with the kind of opulence that has characterized the Rocky Patel brand identity for so long. On lighting the cigar, you’ll find that the

Blind Man's Puff · Dec 5, 2018
Back in July, Rocky Patel announced the A.L.R., which stands for Aged, Limited, and Rare. It was first shown off at the IPCPR trade show. This blend is the first in the series that will run for years. The project started three years ago when Rocky blended a special small batch cigar that he would only order a run of 100,000. He decided it would be a good cigar to age and this became the first Rocky Patel ALR. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. This cigar is rolled at Rocky Patel’s TaviCusa factory in Estelí. The ALR began shipping in August and comes in three vitolas: Robusto (5 x 50) $13, Toro (6 x 52) $14, and Sixty (6 x 60) $15. All three come in boxes of 20. Only 1,500 boxes of each were made.

Rocky Patel ALR Second Edition Robusto
Halfwheel · Dec 8, 2019 · October 2019
In the cigar world there is no guarantee that being aged, limited, and/or rare will make a cigar any good, but in the case of the Rocky Patel ALR Second Edition, the combination seems to have worked fairly well. While there are some spots where the flavor gets a bit off, for the most part it is a smooth progression from start to finish as flavors get woven together with good balance and complexity, rarely letting any particular one dominate the profile. The technical aspects were incredibly solid as well across all three samples, never needing a touch-up or causing any concern. This is a solid second entry in the ALR line and one that is worth lighting up.

Today, I’m smoking a Rocky Patel A.L.R. in a 6-by-52 box-pressed Toro. Over his thirty-year career, Rocky Patel has produced dozens of popular blends, including Decade, Sixty, Ocean Club, and the esteemed Rocky Patel Mulligans franchise. A.L.R. cigars are available in three sizes, which Rocky releases in limited quantities annually. A.L.R. stands for “Aged, Limited, and Rare.” The blend I’m smoking is Rocky’s second edition of the A.L.R. line. He re-blended the original recipe from 2018 after aging the tobaccos for two years.Read full review on Holt's Staff Reviews

Solid draw with a heavy smoke output. Coffee, spice, and cocoa powder buries into the finish. I can feel the powder. The retrohale mixes a few things tightly together without allowing for a lot of separation. Earth, cocoa, graphite, and some raisin.Smooth cigar.Milk chocolate, sm

The Rocky Patel Aged Limited Rare Second Edition Robusto has a very impressive presentation, I only wish the same care had been taken with the blend profile. Unfortunately, the flavor profile rapidly falls apart after the first third, eventually becoming harsh and unpleasant by the final third. The construction was impeccable.
