Rocky Patel Conviction Toro

Cigar Aficionado · Jan 1, 2025

Can a single cigar be worth $100? Several cigars have reached (or exceeded) this price point in recent years as cigars grow increasingly expensive. But a high price tag is not a guarantor of high quality. In the case of the Rocky Patel Conviction Toro, however, the extreme price is paired with an extremely delicious smoke. Conviction sells for $100 per cigar, and it’s the most expensive cigar Patel has ever made. Why is the price so dear? Patel made the cigar with tobacco grown in Nicaragua in 2014, the first year he grew tobacco in that country. The cigar is all Nicaraguan on the inside, with a dark, Mexican San Andrés wrapper on the outside. We taste cigars blind at Cigar Aficionado, which means when we rate them, we don’t know what country they are from, who made the cigar or how much it costs. We found the Conviction brilliant, a medium-to-full-bodied cigar that’s a superb performer, delivering an opulent core of cocoa powder and dark chocolate flavor. And it’s a cigar that builds in flavor, getting better and better the longer it is smoked.

Rocky Patel Conviction

Halfwheel · Jul 31, 2024 · December 2023

In what has thus far been a year of cigars that I would call good to very good in terms of flavor but hampered by combustion issues, the Rocky Patel Conviction stands out as delivering one of the most complex and balanced profiles I have smoked. The cigar is a showcase of micro-adjustments, weaving core flavors in and out and up and down the intensity scale, drawing on an impressive mix of earth, chocolate, coffee, creaminess, wood and pepper to create a profile that never plays the same bar twice and yet never loses its rhythm. I can't overlook the fact that the cigar, like many of its contemporaries, did suffer combustion issues in its second half, a problem I struggle to understand for this release yet one I have come to accept as simply a reality of the time. Solely based on how I scored the flavor, this is the type of cigar that could finish #1 on our annual Top 25, but the construction was so problematic that it cost the Rocky Patel Conviction a shot of even being on the list. In a non-review setting, I'd be inclined to say that the flavor is more than enough to carry the cigar through those issues. I also feel that it bears mentioning again that while each cigar has a similar profile and progression, each one hit its high note in a different spot, making for a unique experience worthy of smoking a couple of these if possible. If an occasion calls for a very enjoyable cigar that will reward your senses with flavor, aroma and stimulation, the Rocky Patel Conviction should certainly deliver.
