Rocky Patel DBS
Cigar Snob · Jan 9, 2024
Rocky Patel increased the level of difficulty in this blend by employing a double broadleaf binder. Broadleaf tends to be a thicker, heartier tobacco that can cause burn problems if not selected carefully, and doubling down makes it even harder. The upshot, however, is a cigar jam-packed with flavor from start to finish and a #13 ranking.

A tall cigar enrobed in a dark, veiny cover leaf that gives it a rustic appearance. The even draw and combustion deliver a toasty, leathery smoke sweetened by notes of ginger-molasses cookie, chocolate and raisin, culminating in a cedary finish.

When a cigar company puts one of the types of tobacco used in a line's blend into the name of that line, it makes me think that the profile is going to be led by that tobacco, and as such sets a bit of an expectation to get plenty of that tobacco. I'm not saying that I didn't get that from the Rocky Patel DBS Toro, but what I did get isn't quite what I remember about broadleaf tobaccos, or at least it wasn't what I expect from such a varietal. The cigar didn't have quite the sweetness that I think broadleaf offers, but what it did offer in that department was good. There was more woodiness in the blend, but it was a very good expression of that flavor, about as rich and refined as I've tasted in some time. There's certainly earth and pepper, and both play great roles in the profile. What the leads me to say is that while I'm not quite sure that I tasted the effects of the two broadleaf tobaccos in the blend, what I can tell is that, regardless of what it is called, I tasted a very good and very enjoyable.

Over the years, Rocky Patel Premium Cigars has been known for using Broadleaf wrapper – whether Connecticut Broadleaf or Pennsylvania Broadleaf. Over the past couple of years, there have been shortages of Broadleaf tobacco, typically of the Broadleaf grown in Connecticut. As a result, this has led many cigar factories to seek out alternative tobaccos. […] Key flavors: Earth, Mineral, Mocha, Wood, White Pepper.

I must have missed the memo on companies going Double Broadleaf in 2022. There have been hits and misses with these releases, but the Rocky Patel DBS Robusto is a true hit. Almost sunk my battleship. The cigar had transitioning throughout and a cornucopia of complex flavors. Great strength and balance as well. I think the only low point was the draw, but a great blend overall.
