A good-looking robusto that exhibits excellent combustion, forming a white, flaky ash. First puffs are redolent of almond paste, with elements of coffee, cedar and cinnamon-baked apple. A backbone of black pepper helps to usher in a sweet, fruity finish. The draw is lush.

Recently, we hosted Rocky Patel for our annual Rocky event at Holt’s, and I had the chance to smoke a Rocky Patel Disciple while we sat down to catch up. The Rocky Patel portfolio is home to dozens of top-rated cigars because Rocky’s a cigarmaker who never stops creating. He’s constantly tweaking and perfecting his work, preparing to introduce groundbreaking new cigars throughout the year. Rocky Patel Disciple came out in 2021, and it’s blended from a San Andrés wrapper leaf over well-aged Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos.

Rocky Patel Disciple Half Corona

If you’ve smoked other vitolas of the Rocky Patel Disciple blend, the Half Corona is a decent yet somewhat incomplete representation of that blend, something I have to attribute to its size. While it provides an impressive smoking time—though one I would imagine would be shorter if smoked for enjoyment and not the purposes of a review—its compact vitola limits just how much canvas the tobacco has to paint on. The other downside of the cigar is that the small size isn’t seemingly congruent with the pitch to smoke it in a shorter time frame, as the final third can really be adversely effected by heat from quicker puffs. Again, if you like the blend but want it in a shorter format, the Rocky Patel Disciple Half Corona is a good option, but I think the better experience of the blend is found in the bigger sizes.

Rocky Patel Disciple Bala

The Rocky Patel Disciple Bala delivers quite the visual spectacle for the pre-light, and there is a time through the first third where the cigar shows promise, unfortunately the dark and earthy nature of the profile just becomes palate fatiguing for the remainder of the review. Although I do really enjoy full bodied cigars, the Bala seemed to provide strength at the expense of flavor complexity.

The first taste impressions of this cigar are a floral scent, chocolate, sponge cake, cocoa, and fruity notes. The spectrum is complemented by coffee and cinnamon, earthy/nutty aromas, and peppery spice.
