For this 2024 release, Rocky Patel revisited the double binder technique employed in the DBS, this time combining Connecticut Shade and Connecticut Broadleaf tobaccos. The double-binder method adds complexity to the blend while aiding in combustion and demonstrates an evolution from Rocky Patel and TAVICUSA, his Nicaraguan factory.

In my original review of the Rocky Patel Gold Label Toro, my main criticism was that it was a “session cigar,” something that was going to be consistent but rarely ever changing. I think that there are enough differences now that the aged version of the cigar no longer fits that description, though it’s still not one that provides dynamic changes. If Rocky Patel could figure out how to deliver the aged flavor profile I got as a fresh one, I suspect the Gold Label would have a lot more fans. It’s a pretty full-flavored and versatile profile, most importantly, one that never stepped out of bounds. Aging cigars is a crapshoot; in this case, it worked out quite well.

I’m smoking Gold Label from the esteemed Rocky Patel portfolio, and I’m about to fire up a 5.5-by-50 box-pressed Robusto to savor one of Rocky’s more recent additions. Rocky launched the Gold Label blend in 2024 with a series of traditional sizes handcrafted at his Tavicusa factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. The cigar bands and boxes Rocky chose for Gold Label reflect the serious upgrades that he’s made to his packaging over the past few years.

The Rocky Patel Gold Label Robusto had promising flavor combinations in the first third that kept me quite engaged. The profile was still interesting in the second third but not at the same level of complexity, becoming more average as it moved into the last third. I would say the price point on the Gold Label Robusto is fairly reasonable for the 2024 market, and I would smoke this cigar again but I don't think I would actively seek it out.
