Rocky Patel loves to celebrate birthdays, milestones or anniversaries of any kind. So, when he turned 60 years old in 2021, nobody was surprised that Patel thought a new cigar was in order. In reality, he had been thinking about a 60th birthday project for quite some time. According to Patel, the cigars were already aged for two years before they were released, and it shows. Made in Nicaragua at his Tavicusa factory, the cigar is composed of Nicaraguan tobacco wrapped in a dark Mexican cover leaf from the San Andrés region. On paper, this combination of tobaccos isn’t particularly uncommon, but two years in the aging room have given these cigars a cohesive elegance and refinement. Big and box-pressed, the Sixty resembles a chocolate bar, and Patel takes advantage of the large ring gauge by loading it with bold tobacco that lays down a foundation of leather and wood and continues to build in flavor with tasty layers of coffee, walnut and a ground red pepper spiciness. This cigar doesn’t just represent Patel’s six decades on earth, but also demonstrates how he’s developed as a cigarmaker and how his understanding of raw materials continues to evolve.

Rocky Patel Sixty was released in 2021 to celebrate the 60th birthday the brand’s creator, Rocky Patel. His birthday was on Feb. 26, 2021. The blend for Sixty uses a Mexican San Andrés wrapper, with Nicaraguan binder and fillers. The cigars are said to have been aged for two years after being rolled before being put on shelves. The line comes in three sizes: Toro 6 1/2 x 52 $17.00, Sixty 6 x 60 $18.00, and Robusto 5 1/2 x 50 $16.00. All come in boxes of 20. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The Rocky Patel Sixty is not the only cigar his company has made to celebrate a birthday. The Rocky Patel II-XXVI came out in 2013 and celebrates Rocky’s birthday in Roman numerals 2-26, meaning February 26th. The Rocky Patel 50 and Rocky Patel Fifty-Five also celebrated his birthdays. The Rocky Patel Sixty Toro is also offered in a special humidor, with 100 cigars and sells for $2,500.

If you're an experienced enough cigar smoker to have an idea what kind of profile a Mexican San Andrés wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and filler is likely to offer, you're likely to enjoy this cigar. If you can imagine that blend with two years of age on the finished cigars, you're likely to enjoy this cigar. It's certainly not a cigar for everyone, as the clay-forward earth, the pepper and the general robustness won't sit well on every palate. It's refined but fairly unapologetic, distinguished but unafraid to cut loose. For my palate, that's an enjoyable cigar, though I wished it had some more complexity, harmony and nuance—all things I wish almost every cigar I smoke would have more of but something I make more of a request of from a cigar with a truly premium price tag and an age statement of two years as finished cigars. That all said, the Sixty by Rocky Patel Toro is an enjoyable cigar, one I would gladly smoke again but one I might be a bit hesitant to add multiples of to my humidor.

Well, as we head into 2023, we’ve got a fresh crop of the ‘Top 25 Cigars of the Year’ for 2022 to evaluate from Cigar Aficionado, and near the top of the rankings, at No. 2, is a gargantuan and glorified smoke from Rocky Patel called the Sixty, and today I’m smoking it in a 6-by-60 size of the same name, Sixty. Rocky Patel has been a premium cigarmaker for nearly three decades, transitioning from a career as an entertainment lawyer in Hollywood in the 1990s.

Rocky Patel Sixty Robusto

While I thoroughly enjoyed the first third, the latter two thirds showed too much leather without backing it up with other notes. The Rocky Patel Sixty Robusto has a good number of flares (triple bands, nice quality wrapper), but I don't care about that, as I'm only concerned about the flavor delivery. So given that perspective, the higher $16 price point just doesn't deliver.
