More than 10 years ago Rocky Patel put out a line called the Rocky Patel Sun Grown. Since then, it's become one of his staple brands, but it wasn't until last year that he decided to create a maduro version.Unlike the original line, which is still made in Honduras, the new version is made in Nicaragua at Patel's TaviCusa factory. It's also rolled in a dark, Connecticut broadleaf wrapper. This new interpretation was dubbed the Rocky Patel Sun Grown Maduro, and the Robusto is a great representation of the full-bodied blends coming out of Nicaragua today.The first Sun Grown was a dark cigar to begin with, but this more modern version has surpassed the original in every respect—it's darker, it's stronger and it's more complex. The cigars are also trunk-pressed, giving them an attractive appearance that hints at the bold blend of Nicaraguan tobacco under the broadleaf wrapper—and they harmonize beautifully, imparting earthy, nutty notes and bittersweet chocolate with the sweeter properties of the wrapper.Astute observers will notice the new packaging as well. Both band and box have their own unique design to adequately give these cigars their own identity.

Rocky Patel created a truly marvelous cigar this year, and I can’t wait to see the response to it. Those creamy notes of caramel and chocolate, plus the slightly spicy pepper, combines for a really satisfying smoking experience. All of that, met with its fantastic construction – this may put Mr. Patel in high chance of some awards this year.

I’ve never found the Rocky Patel Sun Grown Maduro to be complex. In fact, my previous recollection of the blend was that it was strong, linear and unbalanced. Fortunately, the two negative descriptors don’t apply to the DeSocio. Unfortunately, it’s still not very complex. I don’t mean this as a cop-out, but this is a cigar that’s much better suited for a night with friends than an evaluation despite whatever the score might say. It will stand up well to a wide range of big alcoholic drinks, it burns well and it never gets harsh or bitter, but it’s just not that nuanced of a cigar.

I’m smoking Rocky Patel Sun Grown Maduro in a box-pressed 6.5 x 52 Toro today. In 2016, Cigar Aficionado ranked Sun Grown Maduro as the ‘#2 Cigar of the Year’ in its annual Top 25 list. The accolade shows off brand founder Rocky Patel’s commitment to his craft and the continual evolution of his cigars. Rocky brings an element of glitz and glamour to the cigar industry few other cigarmakers possess. He left a high-profile career as an attorney in Hollywood in the early 1990s to pursue his love of premium cigars – an unconventional path by many standards. He’s a natural fit, though.
