The original Romeo by Romeo y Julieta debuted in 2012 and was posed as a stronger blend to the regular Romeo y Julieta line. Since then, there have been three line extensions: the Romeo By Romeo Y Julieta Aging Room, the Romeo Anejo By Romeo y Julieta, and the Romeo 505 Nicaragua. The fourth extension is the Romeo San Andrés by Romeo y Julieta and is what we are reviewing today. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. This is also the fifth collaboration with AJ Fernandez and Altadis USA. The previous collaborations were Gispert Intenso, Monte by Montecristo AJ Fernandez, Montecristo Crafted by AJ Fernandez, and the H. Upmann by AJ Fernandez. This cigar is blended by Rafael Nodal of Aging Room and recently Altadis USA and AJ Fernández. It is rolled at AJ Fernandez’ factory in Nicaragua. The wrapper is a Mexican San Andrés, binder from Nicaragua, and filler from Nicaragua and Dominican Republic. Romeo y Julieta San Andrés comes in four sizes, Robusto (5 x 50) — $9.35, Toro (6 x 54) — $9.55, Pirámides (6 1/8 by 52) — $9.70 and Short Magnum (5 1/2 by 60) — $9.85. All come in boxes of 20.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, you had me at San Andrés. It has become one of my favored leaves for a number of reasons, and in two of the three samples, the Romeo San Andrés by Romeo y Julieta Toro does a commendable job showing off some of its better qualities. It's still not the top of the heap, and the third sample left quite a bit to be desired thanks to a second half that was rough and metallic, including leaving a stinging sensation on my tongue as I write this. I'm certainly intrigued by this blend as putting the brand in the hands of Nodal and Fernández seems to have been a smart move, and hopefully a bit more time will be favorable to this. If you're a fan of San Andrés tobacco, I certainly think this is worth giving a shot as it doesn't do anything to diminish the growing reputation of the varietal.

Heavy gritty earth, palate coating red pepper spice, charred wood all wrapped up in a medium plus strength profile sums up Romeo San Andrés by Romeo y Julieta. This is a decent heavy and dark cigar but one that is a tad mundane and typical for me.
