Foundation The Tabernacle Havana Seed CT #142 Corona

Blind Man's Puff · Mar 8, 2019 · December 2018

The Tabernacle Havana Seed CT #142 is a followup to Nick Melillo and Foundation cigar company’s original Tabernacle which was released in 2016. This new blend was shown off at the 2018 IPCPR trade show in July 2018 but did not ship until December. Currently it is available in four vitolas: Toro – 6×52, Robusto – 5×50, Corona – 5.25×46, Double Corona – 7×54. Prices go form$9/cigar to $13/cigar. The wrapper used for the blend is a Havana Seed #142 Grown in Connecticut in the Connecticut River Valley, It also uses a Mexican San Andres binder and fillers from Esteli and Jalapa Nicaragua, and the Jamastran region of Honduras. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The wrapper leaf known as Havana Seed #142 has a unique story. Its origins are unknown besides that it came to the US between 1870 and 1880. It has similarities to broadleaf, but is smaller and smoother. It also grows upright on the stalk making for better yields. It is spicy and earthy like Cuban tobacco, with hints of cedar but has sweetness like Connecticut Broadleaf. It has been evolving in the Connecticut River Valley for over 100 years and Nick has been working with particular farmers in the valley since 2014 to help get the right flavor characteristics. This work ended up as Havana Seed #38 and Havana Seed #1207, also known as Page-Comstock – then those were combined for Havana #142. The leaf is oily and full flavored but is also thin, necessitating an extended fermentation process, at lower heat. The tobacco used in this cigar has been curing for almost 3 years in Nicaragua under AJ Fernandez and Nick.

The Tabernacle Havana Seed CT No. 142 Corona

Cigar Dojo · Dec 7, 2018

Being the followup to 2016's The Tabernacle cigar, The Tabernacle Havana Seed CT No. 142 moves outside the conventional norms of sequel releases, focusing on a unique, hybridized wrapper that is grown in Connecticut. This leaf was selected in 2014, prior to Foundation Cigar Company's 2015 debut, which has been fermenting at the Tabacalera A.J. Fernandez factory for a lengthy three years. The wrapper is applied over a similar binder/filler recipe to the original Tabernacle cigar, giving a familiar, yet unique, smoking experience. The cigars are quickly noticeable as being full-flavored, with nuances of hickory, aged tobacco, botanicals, and ripe fruit. Some samples also veered towards even more unique, somewhat indescribable flavors that helped put the experience over the top. Unfortunately, this could not be found in enough smoking sessions to be counted in the final tally. The blend is overall balanced, unique, and without unwanted flavors throughout.

Cigar Coop · Apr 13, 2019

When the calendar year comes to a close, it becomes the season of lists ranking the top cigars of the year by various media outlets. In 2017, there was one cigar that dominated the lists like no other had before – and that was Foundation Cigar Company’s The Wise Man Maduro.  It would finish as […] Key flavors: Coffee, Earth, Orange, Pepper.

The Tabernacle Havana Seed CT 142

Holt's Staff Reviews · Jan 25, 2023

I’m smoking a 5-by-50 Robusto from Foundation Cigars called The Tabernacle Havana Seed CT 142. Foundation brand founder Nick Melillo has been pumping out a steady supply of small-batch blends for the past ten years. Melillo spent around a decade working at Drew Estate before launching his own brand, The Tabernacle Havana Seed CT 142, a cigar that’s based on the original Tabernacle blend, is handmade in Nicaragua at the AJ Fernandez factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. As you may deduce from the cigar’s name, Havana Seed CT No.

The Tabernacle Havana Seed CT No.142 Corona

Halfwheel · Sep 5, 2022 · Dec. 3, 2018

After my very first puff, I wrote that I was concerned about whether these cigars had been aged too long because of a sort of hollowness that was present on that first puff. The hollowness that I was concerned about never really came to fruition, but this is not a cigar I’d recommend aging for very long. Like so many other cigars with this type of wrapper and bold, aggressive fillers from Nicaragua—the essence of what the cigar should be is almost certainly not what I’m tasting after more than three years. Aging any cigar is a bit of a crapshoot, but I find these types of cigars to be an even larger gamble. Oddly, I think the aging progression of The Tabernacle Havana Seed CT No.142 Corona to be rather simplistic: it’s the diet soda version of what I’ve come to expect from this blend. The flavors are more or less what I’d expect, noticeably turned down from fresh, but by no means mild; the strength on the other hand makes it clear this is not a fresh cigar. While the score will likely suggest otherwise—the flawless construction helped the redux review—I don't think this is a better cigar than fresh, but that doesn't mean there's much wrong here.

Developing Palates · Jan 30, 2019 · December 2018

In the case of the Foundation Tabernacle Havana Seed CT #142 Corona, the pure number of full flavors ranging from sweetness in chocolate, bread to spices such as dry red peppers and cinnamon made me engaged the entire time. So engaged that every draw made me say "dang this is legit." Excellent job by Nick.
