Dark and softly pressed, this cigar resembles a candy bar. A core of leather and espresso bean are given detail and dimension by notes of anise, almond biscotti, chocolate and caramel before a nougat-like finish. It draws well with mostly even combustion.

Taut, lots of tension. Lively woods (oak & pine) and focused (molasses) sweetness. A waxy dark chocolate fills in the cracks. All rests on a once-dried compost now somewhat moistened with grapefruit juice concentrate. White Pepper is sprinkled atop first, then red is added. Nicely balanced, rigidly defined. Draw is excellent. Ash builds quite well from a slightly wavy very thin line. Press holds admirably as do tight seams. Even packing. Goodly-built to say the least. Smoke out-put is moderate+

Villiger has been playing the long game in the US for several years but there was a noticeable step-up since opening the Villiger de Nicaragua factory in Estelí in late 2021. The factory, a joint venture with Joya de Nicaragua, has paid early dividends with high-flying releases like Villiger de Nicaragua Limited Edition and now the Villiger 1888 Nicaragua.

Recently Villiger North America has announced it was re-introducing the Villiger 1888 line into the U.S. market. The Villiger 1888 was introduced several years ago as a limited production offering to commemorate the Swiss-based company’s 120th anniversary (1888 represents the year the family-owned company was founded). The line is now back – keeping the blend intact […] Key flavors: Floral, Chocolate, Baker’s Spice, Cedar, Fruit.

Villiger 1888 Nicaragua Gordo

Halfwheel · Aug 15, 2024 · May 1, 2024

Based on the three cigars I smoked, the Villiger 1888 Nicaragua Gordo is unlikely to be in the running for any sort of Top 25 list that rewards complexity of flavor. It’s a very earthy profile that has many secondary flavors that only accentuate the earthiness. That can make for a very monotonous experience, though it’s not a bad one. As much as it lacked dynamic contrasts or changes, it was remarkably consistent and easy to smoke. While our scoring system does not prioritize things like approachability and consistency, many consumers do. For better and worse, I’m unlikely to remember this cigar other than for its lack of fuss. But if you are looking for a 6 x 60 that isn’t going to demand your attention while smoking it, this seems like a solid option.

Even though price doesn't factor into the scoring, it is definitely worth mentioning that this is something that is a fantastic budget friendly cigar. For those that find the flavor profile enjoyable, it may well turn out to be an ideal daily smoke.
