Dark and softly pressed, this cigar resembles a candy bar. A core of leather and espresso bean are given detail and dimension by notes of anise, almond biscotti, chocolate and caramel before a nougat-like finish. It draws well with mostly even combustion.

The factory, a joint venture with Joya de Nicaragua, has paid early dividends with high-flying releases like Villiger de Nicaragua Limited Edition and now the Villiger 1888 Nicaragua.

Based on the three cigars I smoked, the Villiger 1888 Nicaragua Gordo is unlikely to be in the running for any sort of Top 25 list that rewards complexity of flavor. It’s a very earthy profile that has many secondary flavors that only accentuate the earthiness. That can make for a very monotonous experience, though it’s not a bad one. As much as it lacked dynamic contrasts or changes, it was remarkably consistent and easy to smoke. While our scoring system does not prioritize things like approachability and consistency, many consumers do. For better and worse, I’m unlikely to remember this cigar other than for its lack of fuss. But if you are looking for a 6 x 60 that isn’t going to demand your attention while smoking it, this seems like a solid option.

Citrus | White & pink peppercorn | Egg cream Beachy. All sandy and sunny and salty. That brightness is in part a somewhat medicinal clinging citrus. Peachy, too. Suede, thinly, and chicken coop distantly. Slight oatiness. Traces of Cayenne. Spicy but sweetly and not aggressively. Did I say medicinal clinging citrus? Seems I did. Egg cream. Draws well and smooth. Fairly lush and quite plush mouth-feel for being so high and bright. Ash grows well and long. Stack a' dimes. Burn-line isn't dead-even

Even though price doesn't factor into the scoring, it is definitely worth mentioning that this is something that is a fantastic budget friendly cigar. For those that find the flavor profile enjoyable, it may well turn out to be an ideal daily smoke.
